A clear majority of 67 per cent of the poll supported the "Yes" campaign - just 18 months after voters rejected the Lisbon Treaty first time round.
The agreement must now be ratified by the Czech Republic and Poland, the only EU states still to back it. Tory leader David Cameron has promised a British referendum if Lisbon is not in force after the next General Election - and if he is Prime Minister.
He said last night: "We will name the date of the referendum in the election campaign, we will lead the campaign for a "No" vote.
But, unless the Poles and Czechs continue to object, it is almost certain to have been signed and sealed by then.
The treaty creates a powerful new EU president - with Tony Blair, pictured left, favourite to be installed within weeks, as we revealed last week.
It will also bring in a new foreign affairs chief.
And the EU will be able to push through laws in important areas without the unanimous support of all member states.

hopefully this will be pushed through quickly by the other two and we can get this going, the president isn't all powerful, it's almost exactly the same as the current position only it's not a shared seat. Plus it's only 18 months a term.
