READERS RAISE £100K FOR LIONS

Starving animals saved from Romanian zoo after News of the World campaign

NEWS of the World readers can take pride after smashing through the £100,000 barrier to save the 14 starving lions from a decaying Romanian zoo.

Another £50,000 is needed to put the plan into action to bring the animals to the safety of the Yorkshire Wildlife Park.

It is hoped the lions - named after the England soccer team - will be flown to the UK in the next two weeks when the target should be reached.

We launched our appeal last month after revealing the horrendous conditions at the ramshackle zoo - and that the pride will be shot unless a home is quickly found for them.

The Yorkshire park's spokesman John Minion said last night: "This is incredible news. We can't thank the readers of the News of the World enough for their generosity. It's such a fantastic achievement."

Caged in Romanian hell hole, these starving big cats face a cruel death

Thank you for all the publicity the News of the World has given - the fund is now at £104,070 - please can the News of the World run another story about this brilliant achievement and hopefully the fund can reach target quickly to get the lions over here out of those awful cages - thank you so much:-)

I wish you well with the appeal and look forward to seeing the lions in England before very long. It's tremendous to see so much support and enthusiasm for this project to care for these neglected animals.

Fantastic news, the donations have steadily kept coming in. Thanks to the News of the World team for keeping the story updated for us all - uh, hey guys? I been asking everyone I know to donate for those precious lions, do you think you could go to the head honchos of News of the World and see if we could maybe get a little boost from them too?? I know, I know! but I wouldn't be doing my duty if I didn't ask :-) We have raised an amazing amount, a little way further to go now and I just hope that the plan can get started. Please keep the donations coming in xxxxx
