Thousands of you dug deep to raise £45,000 after reading our heart-rending report of a pride of lions who will die if they aren't rescued from the Romanian zoo.
But £105,000 more is needed to bring the beasts from Ozadea Zoo to safety at Yorkshire Wildlife Park.
Park director Cheryl Williams said: "We've got off to an amazing start."
More than £18,000 was donated online and hundreds sent in cheques.
Others made offers of help, including a signwriter who will print campaign car stickers.
Last week we revealed how Caesar and his pride are crammed into tiny cages. All are increasingly sick and will be put down if they aren't saved.

I am so distressed by the plight of these beautiful animals and I certainly wouldn't condone euthanising them! I'm sorry - I don't agree that these wonderful beasts will not contribute to the conservation programme!! ALREADY they have brought the plight of the eradication of Big Cats to the attention of the public!! Already they have people talking about conservation, zoo's, and have children are learning about the natural and captive lives of these amazing animals. These particular Big Cats are in effect ambassadors for the Cat World and as such, these particular beasts in Romania deserve to be saved!! My little domestic cat of no benefit to a Conservation breeding programme - but I have no intention of having HIM put to sleep. Why should it be any different for these Big Cats?? All who are doing what they can to help these beautiful beasts have my admiration and thanks!!

These lions are the most magnificent animals on this sorry earth. They must be saved, healed and freed to live out their lives in safety, but free forever, from pathetic humans who had no right to cage them in the first place.

i agree that its not just lions that need help, it is all the animals in the zoo too that need help, and not just in this zoo i would imagine.
I understand where you are coming from when you say euthanise them but i disagree because if you believe that animals are as equal as us on this earth then you wouldn't even consider that. For instance if it was humans in their it would be a different story and all over the world in 5 seconds, because it means then if someone helps they are a hero, and seems selfish. You wouldn't say, lets put them down would you, you would be more inclined to help them, even though we are over populated with people.
They deserve a chance at life, whether they can help in the conservation programme or not.
I agree they shouldn't look after animals and open zoos if they can't look after them, but sometimes people really want to help and start off with good intentions but it goes south because they don't alays know whats best for them all the time or end up with too many and not enough money, you cant just assume people like to keep them like this.

i wish to thank all of the great hearted animal lovers who begun this campaign, who spread the word, who donate,
all is true,
unfortunately, the Ceausescu regime and the 50 years of communist regime destroyed many things in Romania and all the ex communist countries, these zoos are old and have not the standard which UE pretend, so, if a possibility is, please, please, help those poor lions from ORADEA and yes, all the animals which are in great need there and probably in all the ancient zoos, God bless you for your great hearts, these poor animals hav e already suffered too much and they really are defenceless and deserve a better life, thank you again,
sincerely, Veronica Lach,Romania

I find it interesting that people are so quick to comment when it is obvious that they haven't even read the article properly!
The lions are in Romania at Ozadea Zoo! They are not in Britain! At least not yet, the Yorkshire Wildlife Park has offered to care for the pride, but need to raise £150,000 to ship the animals to the UK and create a proper enclosure for them to live in comfort. What is really sad is that there are more animals at the same romanian zoo that are living under the same circumstances, including wolves and bears. Seems to me that the only fair thing to do, would be to find new homes for all the zoo's animals and then close it down permanently.

The only time I have ever seen a happy pride is on Safari in Africa and at Longleat. I remember seeing a black panther at Chessington when it was a zoo and it was just pacing from left to right as if it was going slowly insane! All the visitors ran straight past the poor thing and on to the rides! It broke my heart! I have never been a fan of zoos and this is why?!!!

Correction to my previous post. I had meant to state that the Romanian zoo isn't the only zoo which has these problems and that we need to address the ones in our own country prior to shipping more wild animals here. My apologies for mentioning Doncaster in my previous post.

I love animals and to see 2 elephants huddled together in a lean to not moving atall in gale force winds made me feel sick. This was at Lympne
By Joany.. Posted September 6 2009 at 10:39 AM.
Susan, this is not in Doncaster. They are in a zoo in Romania and the money raised will bring them over here to the Yorkshire Wildlife Park where they can look after them properly.

Doncaster isn't the only 'zoo' or 'wildlife park' in this country that has fallen short in terms of providing accommodation that is close to their natural habitat. Port Lympne is one such wildlife park. I visited Port Lympne on Thursday 3rd Sept of this year and was appalled to see how some of the animals were kept.
Two elephants could be seen huddled miserably in a lean-to, while another appeared depressed and immobile in a nearby field on its own without shelter and exposed to gale force winds and rain.
Some apes are cramped into small cages and the reptile 'house' is pitiful. I came away feeling ashamed that my £16.95 ticket contributed to the emotional and physical distress of some of these magnificent animals.
