Patrick McQuaid was just nine when he saw the blonde little girl's terrified face peering through the chicken-wire fence that separated his home from Garrido's, sobbing: "I'm Jaycee."
Patrick, 27, recalled the encounter that now haunts him in the summer of 1991, saying: "I thought she was pretty." He asked if she was visiting but she said she lived there.
Before he could ask anything else, the 6ft 4ins frame of Garrido loomed over and took her back into the house.
Patrick went on: "I didn't think anything of it. I was young."
Yesterday Garrido's father blamed a motorcycle accident his son suffered as a teenager for his descent into insanity.
Manuel Garrido said the crash made him seek comfort in drugs, adding: "They had to do surgery.
"After that he was a different boy. Entirely different.
"Tell those cops to treat him like a crazy person because he is out of his mind."
