This is such a sad story and if i were jaycee i would have escaped when i had the chance, but maybe she was afraid of him catching him and killing her. that is so terrible that he would force her to have children when she is only 14 years old he must have waited until then because that must have been when she started the menstrual cycle. This guy is a very sick man and deserves to go to hell! jaycee's daughters probley dont even want to live with her because they love him. God this is such a sick perverted guy

What can only be imagined, pray more of our children do not end up in these situations. Pray also that our enforcement agencies have learned a valuable lesson. It is always a tragedy when our country only takes serious action after it is too late. However, this may very well be a stepping stone for investigators to looking into more than just a pretty front yard, they can now pick up their shovels and dig into the back yard as well. I believe if they do it now rather than wait ONCE AGAIN until its too late, do random pass overs throughout our country and question people who have suspicious activity in their back yards. DEA have done it in past searches to locate evidence of drug activity, they should now look into child prostitution or false imprisonment activity right there in, sad to say, our own back yard. And as an American with a right to be concerned, I would let them search my back yard, because I want them to search yours as well.

i think the descriptions of living conditions are slightly innacurate. it's not quite as bad as i imagined, kind of a hippy camp. i think they may have been better off out in the yard than under the same roof with those two sickos. what concerns me is the locked soundproof shed, questions about other possible pregnancies, and descriptions of bloodstains and a cage. were they slaughtering their own meat perhaps? just happy she's finally home, and i hope those children weren't used against her or mistreated. what a triumph for Jaycee. some people might blame God but i believe it's a corrupt world we live in, and God was with her and all of us who live through tragic circumstances. i think people may be starting to understand how these young children can be manipulated and controlled by terror and abuse. the instinct to live is very strong.

Pretty sad. I type creepy Phil in the web browser and end up here. That sicko gets his freedom back and imprisons a young girl. I don't understand why some people believe there is no death penalty in CA. I am from NH, and I even know that. That is where another sicko, Scott Peterson, is waiting to be killed!!!!! This story is really horrific. Anyone who doesn't think so is probably a sociopath, or someone who has suffered something very traumatic in their lives. Or, someone related to creepy Phil.
As far as Africa is concerned, I feel bad for the starving people, but I think the USA should be sending birth control instead of food. In America, the people on welfare who can't afford kids are pumping them out left and right. They should be given birth control also. If you walk into a store and don't have money, you can't buy anything. So why should a person or couple who can't afford children keep having them? I really hate the government as well as ignorant cops who get away with all the things we can't. Back to the main story. My prayers are with Jaycee and all her loved ones for a speedy recovery.

When I read this story originaly my eye caught the fact that this evil man had been convicted of rape previously and sentenved to life in prison . Surprise Surprise his "life sentence" turned out to be around 9 years before he was sprung by the do gooders to rape and imprison that poor young girl . Life sentences are a joke . If a life sentence meant anything this guy would still be behind bars.

Praise the Lord for Jaycee Lee to finally take some action to seek for help!! I trully admire her well thinking plans and I think she was saying to herself "Enough is Enough" and decided to put her foot down and took action because I am telling you without those two daughters of hers she will probably would have still been considered missing until this day. Them three made a well careful plan on how was the best way to escape and stay alive after being held captured secretly for all these years. My prayers still go out to the Dugard family because they still need strength and recover well for what they went through. I also pray for those children that I know are still missing and have not reunited with their family yet that one day they will have the same experience like Jaycee just had! The power of prayer does work if you believe in it.

If he had of served his whole sentence he would have not been in the situation to kidnap Jaycee......the justice system stinks.....anyone convicted of kidnapping and rape should be locked up for life!!!!! Really I cannot imagine what it would like to loose your complete freedom to a rapist for many formative years of your life.
It's shocking to think that this could have occurred and that the rapist got away with this evil act for so long.
I hope Jaycee's life improves.
I have one question though which has not been answered.
What will happen to Jaycee's children ?
Will they go with their Mother or be fostered out ?

I for one am not prepared to say Jaycee's "whole life has been ruined". As utterly heinous as what has been done to her and her children is, she is 29 years old and she and her children can hopefully now look forward to a future of freedom, filled with endless possibilities. Certainly, there are likely going to be serious psychological challenges but people are more resilient than we sometimes give them credit for. Let's all hope and pray that they can move forward and recover from the trauma inflicted on them sooner than later.

In the US, police need either a warrant or "probable cause" to search a property. I hope a law is introduced that stipulates that the fact that someone is a violent sex offender (and in this case a parolee too) is in itself probable cause. These perverts' rights shouldn't trump the rights of the innocent.

Seen worse living conditions quite untidy but not the filth and squalour that is described.Very traumatic situation for everyone concerned especially Jaycee and also her step father who was getting the blame for years.This Garrido guy is obviously not right in the head and his wife has been weak willed and under his control.Glad that the girls are all fit and well though and hope this has a happy ending and maybe they can get over it and get screwed and lied too by the Government and the banks instead like everyone else.

I pray that these young women get justice. I have a feeling he'll end up in a mental institution because he is a nut job. This couple has hurt a family that may never heel without many years of counselling. He caused a divorce with the natural mother and step-dad. The step-dad was a prime target for many years. I don't believe in the death penalty. I think put them to death is an easy way out. I want them to put them in prison for the rest of their lives without ever being let out to prey on others.

Amber I am English, California does have Death Penalty.. the state has the largest "Death Row" population in the country (though Texas is far more active in carrying out executions). California's "Death Row" is in San Quentin State Prison situated north of San Francisco in Marin County. Executions in California are currently on hold as human rights issues are addressed

I am American and NO California does not have the death penalty. Mostly it is the southern states that use it. I live in Oklahoma and we have lethal injection...which to me is way too easy. You are laid out on a bed and injected with a drip that puts you to sleep and then that is what you do go to sleep and then they let your heart stop. We used to use the electric chair but they changed that back in the type of the hippies (60's or 70's).
The saddest thing is that there are many more Jaycees here in America that are yet to be discovered. Americans are way too private and isolated from each other. No one knows their neighbors and no one is nosy anymore. Back in the old days people knew each other and people used to sit around on their front porches and watch what was going on in their neighborhood and then they would share stories or notify authorities if they had suspicions about someone. Now, most Americans do not even know what is going on within their own families or households let alone what is going on next door or across the street.

This is very sad indeed. Sickening at that. This is definitely something that shouldn't be taken lightly and people like him deserve the ultimate punishment. For something like this to go on without anyone saying anything is insane. Knowing this guy is a child molester, seeing and hearing the things the neighbors heard without at least making a call is just crazy. You can always remain anoynomous and do the right thing. I think some people are failing to read between the lines on this story,it's not about headless barbies or untidy living conditions it's about a sick pervert and his wife who thought it was ok to snatch somebody else's child for their own sick fantasies,whether it's in this country or another it just goes to show how much the laws need changing to protect our children. In this country alone you get a longer jail sentence for dealing drugs than you would for abusing children,things have to change these perverts get sent to jail but their sick perversions are still with them when they are released because apart from signing the sex offenders register what other deterant do they have? Reading about these kind of events saddens me deeply. I feel incredibly sorry for these children and their mother. I can barely comprehend the torture, neglect and deep psychological torment they have experienced at the hands of these people. No human being should be able to exercise this level of control over another.

Yes, the conditions these people were kept in were terrible but, the situation would not have been more acceptable if they had been kept in better surroundings. Both Garrido and his wife denied Jaycee and her children basic human rights. For their crimes, I hope Garrido and his wife are severly punished.

I'm afraid that although the initial trauma may be over, no amount of reintegration and therapy will prepare Jaycee and her children for the difficulties that lie ahead of them.

Also, in response to some of the moronic comments made earlier, I suggest that people stop looking at where the acts were commited. The fact that a similar crime hasn't been discovered in the UK doesn't mean that it isn't happening here or that equally sick people aren't praying on children in UK cities.

This event is a sad one, not just for the family of the victims, Jaycee and the children but for every human being. Perhaps we need to focus a little more attention on getting to know those in our communities, pay some time to take notice of other people around us. After all if people can be held captive, raped and tortured in someones back yard for 18 years without being found out, what else are people getting away with?

Millions of people in Africa live in worse conditions than this, why does no-one posting here acknowledge that? Humanity has a problem here, it goes beyond a couple of kids in a few tents, you people disgust me with your blinkered opinionated rants. Get a life and realise that far worse things happen in the world.

I cannot think of punishment enough for this vile couple. I just hope that Jaycee and her daughters can someday overcome this dreadful time in their lives and allow themselves happiness in the future. As for the comments made by Sue, Glynis and Martin below, do you have no shame, no sympathy? You disgust me!

i would also use the term 'father' loosely, i must stress not the word 'dad'.
by all accounts Garrido is the girls biological 'father' and until jaycee gives details we will not know how or what methods were used to keep her and the girls under his control.
you do not always need shackles or a lock and key to keep someone a prisoner, fear is enough, and we must not forget that this girl was an 11 year old CHILD when she was abducted. one can only assume that jaycees' education stopped when she was 11, and one can only assume that all knowledge of life that would equip an individual to evolve into leading a normal life and deal with situations that arise throughout life and form adult opinions were stolen from her.

children who have had one parent murdered by the other do not always want to break contact with the surviving parent, just as children who are abused still want to remain in contact with the abusing parent.

after reading some of the comments i just hope that jaycee does not have to start defending herself for not 'escaping'.

The only word i can think of SURVIVERS.Jaycee and her children will need years of help to come to terms with life.Garrido will some how will try to convence every one that the voices in his head told him to do it along with his wife.I feel that if he could do it to jaycee has he tried to abuse his 2 daughters as well.We shall see .

now the system will be spending huge amounts of taxpayers money to bring this monster his wife and anyone else who thought, this was normal, to justice, inject them all, we dont need to know the reasons, they dont deserve a fair trial, give the money to the victims to help them re-build their lives.

How many children out there living like this in horror after years of kidnapping.

The law need to be flexible in this area-there need to be regular search warrant into their houses if there is convicted or suspected paedophiles or some creepy loners live in the area. Or capturing strong close images of villages or towns as a routine checks up.

I know these costs money, God what are the solutions to find children from evil capture? I wish I know. May be more of common sense, using your own gut feeling without letting the 'procedures' get in the way.

the fact that what was going on wasnt detected by the police given that he was being monitored is a complete tragedy and embarrassing. That woman life will never be the same and is frightening that there are sick people out there like this that exist. Lock them up and throw away the key. That goes for his wife aswell. She is equally culpable. Public stoning would be to good for them.

there is no excuse on this earth for what this man & woman have done. to treat fellow human beings like this is beyond all comprehension. no amount of explaining will ever make any sense of it. but the one thing i cant comprehend is WHY the filth?WHY the squalor? WHY the depravation? WHY treat people like it? how can anyone do this? the mans a paedo & hes taken this girl as a slave. but yet he allows the children he 'spawned'. who he says he loved to live in such appaling conditions. it beggers belief

Im chilled to the bone - im the same age, 29 and to think that this young girl has spent her life in such conditions, without any reasonable fulfilment, human interaction, joy and happiness makes me genuinely sad. I ask my self the question, what kind of person would I become if that had happened to me... chilling.

@ Elaine - she was a mere child of 11 when she was taken, and spent almost 2/3 of her life in that hell. What did she know about freedom? Who knows what she was told about her circumstances?

Her children were born there in captivity and could not /would not know any better either.

It's anathema to even use the word "father" in the same sentence - how many children who have biological "fathers" who are monsters are VERY happy to forget they even exist! If I found out my father was a monster, he'd be out of my life in an instant, and I would probably be very reluctant to ever have children of my own, for fear of passing on bad genes.

I just hope that all 3 can come out of the "brainwashing" now they have a normal world to compare it to.
They obviously had some bond else they would have gone.... whether fear, or stockholm syndrome we will probably never know but I hope that knowing the joys of a life free of that vile monster will mean they are rehabilitated faster and can come to comprehend what he has done.
I hope he rots in shackles for the rest of his life like he has done to them..... the chair would be too good for him.

How comes Jaycee didnt try to escape tho ? She was only in a tent not a cellar or inside the house even !!! and not even shackled or tied up by all accounts !! Im sure the eldest child could have been lookout then the 29 year old mother could have ran to the neighbours.....yes its easy for me to say, and yes she was probably brainwashed and scared but for the sake of her children why not try

thank god that the police woman followed her instincts and not proceedure otherwise god know how much more of jaycees life would have been wasted.i hope that jaycee and her children will recieve all the support and protection that they need and that if anyone is going to make money out of this tragic story that it will be them.

it makes you wonder, how many more girls are being kept prisoner and forced to have babies, and without any medical help or treatment, god only knows how these girls stay sane, it just does not bare thinking about.

i suspect that even after years of therapy jaycee and her children will never be able to live a 'normal' life, and i hope that the media will not intrude and give all concerned a chance to try and come to terms with the situation, after all to the children Garrido is their father.
a very sad sad situation and i send jaycee and her children my best wishes.
