For Anetta and 13 other kings and queens of the jungle - some too weak to stand or even roar - are to be SHOT unless something is done to save them.
The squalid, ramshackle Romanian zoo that has been their home all their lives has been condemned as unfit for animals by the European Union.
And its director has no money to build proper enclosures to replace the tiny 15ft by 12ft cages into which up to FOUR lions at a time are crammed.
So today we are launching a fundraising campaign . . . to help these manigficent animals roar with pride again.
"We cannot afford to do any more for them," said Daiana Ghender, 43, who is in charge of the state-run zoo built 37 years ago under the communist regime of Nicolae Ceausescu. "I feel terrible when I look at them. They are sick and do not have the space for their bodies."
Caesar, head of the pride, is barely able to walk. His once mighty muscles have atrophied for lack of exercise. He shares his cage with females Annetta and Alis, both seven, and their two cubs. Like all the lions here they sleep on a concrete floor, live in their dirt and are covered in sores.
Most were bred into their hellish captivity at Oradea Zoo. "It was originally created to keep the people happy," said Daiana. "At first there were only a couple of lions. Now we have too many and there is no way to keep them apart to stop them breeding further."
Sickeningly, some visitors to the zoo laugh at the lions' plight. "There is no money and little food for them," said a tearful Daiana. "Any money we make goes straight to the government. "It upsets me so much to see them like this." Soon the zoo will have no choice but to put the animals down.
There is only one way they can escape their fate. Backed by the News of the World, the Yorkshire Wildlife Park wants to bring all the lions to Britain. They need to raise £150,000 to ship the animals to the UK and create a proper enclosure for them to live in comfort.
The park in Branton, near Doncaster, was alerted to the lions' plight through a charity in Romania called SOS Zoo. John Minion, animals director, said: "I went to Romania to see the lions and was shocked.
"The zoo director Daiana and her staff are passionate about the animals and have done what they can. It would be an absolute tragedy if the lions had to be put down.
"We need to get all 14 to Britain as soon as possible. We have ten acres of land we want to develop for them."
Gerry Brudenell, of SOS Zoo, added: "If people in Britain help, it will save the lives of 14 beautiful creatures."
HELP save these tragic lions by sending donations to the Wildlife Heritage Foundation who are collecting cash on the Yorkshire Wildlife Park's behalf.
You can donate electronically to the fund from your online bank. The Barclays account number is 00623016 and the sort code is 20-20-37.
Or you can send a cheque made payable to the Wildlife Heritage Foundation to: Save The Lions, Yorkshire Wildilfe Park, Branton, Doncaster, DN3 3NH.
The park is also raising funds through www.lionrescue.co.uk which will contain a link to the same bank account.

By emily.. Posted October 9 2009 at 1:40 AM.
If I was an England footballer and just had a lion named after me I would be willing to chip in with a donation. After all a few thousand pounds is loose change to these superstars. I suggest the News of the World contact them and the the total should be reached this week

I am disappointed to hear the lions have been named after the England squad when some of the players earn in a week what is required to save these animals. Shame on the obscenely wealthy people of this country and around the world for yet again leaving it to those with the least amount of money to do the right thing.

This is so sad, it really upsets me when I read about animals in distress. I'm definitely donating this week. The people that laugh are pathetic low lifes, they really make my blood boil! I hope enough money is raised in time! I will be checking this site daily

I will donate, can someone tell me how we get this appeal on facebook.I'm no good on the computer but I want to spread the word to save the lions. Please advise.
By helen smith.. Posted September 9 2009 at 6:15 PM.
I have donated but want to do much more so am starting a (hopefully very large) raffle. I am updating the total raised each night on Facebook and creating a web link to hopefully encourage more donations. Let us all try to think of creative ways of raising money to get these poor animals into a good, happy environment. Would be grateful if News of the World could update in next Sunday's paper in the hope of attracting more money.

PLEASE SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE, THESE BEAUTIFUL LIONS HAVE TO BE SAVED...NO LIVING THING SHOULD HAVE TO GO THROUGH SUCH PAIN AND AGONY...THERE ARE ANIMAL RIGHTS.PLEASE HELP THESE BEAUTIFUL CREATURES THAT GOD GAVE US...THEY HAVE FEELINGS JUST LIKE WE DO....
By SHARON WOODLEY..... Posted September 8 2009 at 4:26 AM.
Read about these poor lions plight while on holiday last Sunday. Will make a donation. Does anyone know how the fundraising is doing? Do hope target is met and soon.
By Janet McDonagh.. Posted September 6 2009 at 8:06 PM.
I am appealing to all of the kind hearted business men and women of Britain to please give anything that they can spare to help save these beautiful creatures. I wish so much wasn't down to money these days.
Thanks

Bring them to Africa! There is unlimited space here. Keeping wild animals in captivity is still abuse. These animals need freedom where nature can take care of them and they take care of it!
By Definite.. Posted September 4 2009 at 12:51 PM.
What is being done now. Immediately. to alleviate the suffering of these animals. I am sending some money but I want to know that this will get to where it needs to go. It is awful to think of them in pain and suffering and hungry. They need medical treatment and food. IMMEDIATELY!!
By Zoe Holbourne.. Posted September 3 2009 at 7:40 PM.
I do know the area where the lions will be given a new home and it is quite beautiful and in my opinion not unlike Kenya but obviously colder in the winter.I understand from the information given that they will be given a large area where they will be able to roam and find peace and happiness.I believe this is a very special option and I cannot wait for the day when they are released.I pray every day for this to happen and for these magnificent animals to be looked after and cared for.THANKYOU YORKSHIRE WILDLIFE PARK!

And here, yet another example of just how disgusting the human species is, yes, not special, disgusting. And yet confusingly, others want to help desperately...I'm yet to work us out! Help save them, just because they need it.
By Luka.. Posted September 3 2009 at 5:47 AM.
These animals should be released into their natural habitat. I would not want to spend the rest of my life caged looking at people staring at you. These animals need the sun, hunting skills to kick back in and beautiful surroundings - not cold Doncaster to be kept caged. I think I would rather not be in life to live that life.
By Ron.. Posted September 2 2009 at 11:32 PM.
As humans, we call ourselves the "intelligent" species. Yet we treat all animals of this world with such disrespect, torture, pain and slaughter. These actions are not intelligent.
By Kiantha Shadduck.. Posted September 2 2009 at 9:00 PM.
this is terrible...its a slow death sentence for those beatiful animals. i really hope that it will all turn fine for them.its heart breaking.
By elodie.. Posted September 2 2009 at 4:19 PM.
the lions are not the animals here. its the romanians the government.
what about the other animals at the zoo. why dont WSPA step in? romania should never be aloud into EU. They are corrupt and cant care for their own people, what chance have the poor animals got?
By anto carroll.. Posted September 2 2009 at 10:46 AM.
At a time when the planet is trying to save lions and tigers from extinction, this seems the most horrible thing to happen..They should be shifted to other shelters if this one doesnt work out.. KILLING is not a solution! High time we understand this..
By Leks.. Posted September 2 2009 at 7:53 AM.
its so sad to see the zoo custodian of lions are becoming the killer. if they does not have enough capacity to feed and space to live. it must be shut down with immediate effect. they never allowed to play with the lives of innocent animals
By ashraf khan.. Posted September 2 2009 at 6:59 AM.

Just when you read awful stories after another in the news, this one included, it goes to show the heartwarming side of human nature when you read the comments. My donation on its way, daughter on a comic ration for a month.... NOTW - please do keep us posted on developments and how much raised. The power of the internet , and fingers/paws crossed they should be hear in no time.
By Dee.. Posted September 1 2009 at 1:24 PM.
Free lions, what do people obtain through animal suffering? we will spread this news worldwide!!!
Don't punish animals for having been born on this cruel world and in captivity. Punish yourself instead, for not being civilized enogh to realize that there is no creature on earth who doesn't deserve life and freedom.
By Mary Brown.. Posted September 1 2009 at 1:18 PM.
Please help these lions enjoy a normal life without having to live in a cage and in such awful conditions.
We have a lion rescue place in Drakenstein in South Africa and I know they have helped rescue some Romanian lions before as we donate money for them to get food for a year.
This is terribly sad and they can't fend for themselves.Hope the Uk can help them out and give them a good life.
By Brendan.. Posted September 1 2009 at 11:36 AM.
I hope and pray they manage to save enough to send these animals to the Yorkshire Wildlife Park where at least they will have the chance of a happier life to what they have been living it would be such a crime for these beautiful animals to be destroyed just because of a lack of money. I have actually put the link to this story and the care2 sites link that is also doing what it can for these animals on to my facebook page in the hope that it might spread the word about what is going on with these animals I hope more people also think to spread the story to there contacts as well.
By Sue .. Posted September 1 2009 at 11:31 AM.
this is so sad i was reduced to tears, i am a great animal lover and i am sickened at the way humans treat animals. i hope that we can raise the money needed to bring these fantastic big cats home so they can live out the rest of there lives in comfort and peace. i hope that we are kept up to date with the progress. my donation (£100 birthday money) is on its way.
By tracy steele.. Posted August 31 2009 at 5:51 PM.

By Kren B.. Posted August 31 2009 at 5:10 PM.
I agree with you Cammie, how can people laugh at their predicament?? They are sick!! I have told all my friends on FB about this and asked them to spread the word. I am sending a donation as soon as I can!!!
By Sue Stuart.. Posted August 31 2009 at 10:56 AM.
I have decided to donate more for these lions. They deserve to live! This whole campaign is about the love of animals and life.
By Elaine.. Posted August 31 2009 at 9:31 AM.
Peter, your comments seem heartless and cruel.
To a slight point I do understand your view, but I do not believe in euthing a helpless creature that can still be helped because of the abuse and neglect of man... It sickens me...
"The fate of animals is of greater importance to me

Come on everybody, let's give these beautiful animals a life free from this hell they live..! My £25 has already been sent!
By Chris johnson.. Posted August 30 2009 at 11:05 PM.
Just another one of man's appaulling achievements as the superior species. Countries such as Romania shouldn't have zoos and the like, they need to concentrate on their human conditions first. I shall be donating, in the hope that it will assist, but as a thought .... if they have 14 lions, what other animals and creatures do they have and what conditions are they living in? If they keep magnificent animals such as lions in such enclosures how do they look after other so called "inferior" species!
By Jane O'Neill.. Posted August 30 2009 at 9:24 PM.
In response to Colin: While I respect your views I am quite happy to give £25 to help some beautiful animals that are clearly suffering. Even if putting them down would be painless, surely sacrificing a few quid so they can be happy and give Britain's public a chance to appreciate them, as well as the staff having the pleasure of working close hand with them, is a better option. All it takes is a few thousand people to give a tenner. Come on guys!
By Simon Pryor.. Posted August 30 2009 at 7:13 PM.
I was truly disturbed when reading this article about the plight of these magnificent animals. I have donated £50 to this wonderful and inspiring cause, if only every one who reads this article would donate the price of a meal - the job would be done!!!!! Best of Luck!
By Desmond Parkinson.. Posted August 30 2009 at 5:53 PM.
I am truly saddenend at the plight of these poor animals. I had to donate. Come on Britain !
By Colin.. Posted August 30 2009 at 4:37 PM.
'Save the Lions'....sorry. I appreciate and understand the thoughts and emotions but let us be realistic about this. These 14 lions in a Romanion Zoo would be far better euthanased than brought to the Yorkshire Wildlife Park. As a commercial exercise yes, it will be a whizz, and is sure to bring in thousands of visitors to see the 'saved' animals and make a lot of money. But they are being saved for what? They should never be bred. They are of zero value to any conservation programme. All they are going to do is take up space that could be productively used for a something else. True enough there is an opportunity to educate but on its own that is not enough and certainly not a reason to bring these animals to the UK. Euthanasia is not cruel, unkind or painful. It is a realistic consideration and something applied to thousands of homeless cats and dogs in the UK each year. It make me very angry when I see newspapers using emotional rubbish using words like SHOT (your capitals) and 'execution'. What absolute gooey sentiment. The kindest option....really....really is to put the animals peacefully to sleep where they are.
If it seems like I don't care it is incorrect as I have devoted my life to caring for animals in zoos.
By Peter Dickinson.. Posted August 30 2009 at 4:28 PM.
I've just donated £150.00! I wish it could be more!! I would hate to see these Lions killed!! Come on Britain! Bring these Lions to Yorkshire and give them a second chance at life!

What a sad story, I was very quick to donate for this cause, also posted on face about it and emailed all my friends. these lions must get to yorkshire where they will get such a better life. It would be nice if the NOTW write an article to let us know how they get on and if they raised the money ok.
I would defo go and see them in Branton.
By Lee hall.. Posted August 30 2009 at 1:16 PM.
This has bought tears to my eyes. To think that some local sickos find this amusing??? Thank you NOTW for featuring their plight. Have just donated £15 - hopefully if more of us animal loving skint Brits can do the same, there will be a happy ending for this magnificent lions.
By Lisa.. Posted August 30 2009 at 1:03 PM.
I've witnessed the lions being held at Oradea Zoo first hand and know the team out there trying to do the best for them. They are living in an appauling condition. If enough funds can be raised to relocate them to the UK, it would be truly wonderful!

Have tried repeatedly to post link to Facebook and video but it keeps failing - extremely frustrating especially when time is limited to save these lions - why not have a simple button that posts to FB like other news sites have instead of having to copy and paste??
By Cammie.. Posted August 30 2009 at 12:23 PM.
Is there any way we can link this to Facebook? I've got loads of friends worlwide who love animals on there (and who know others who can help).
We need to try and save these poor gorgeous animals and as for the sickos who laugh at their suffering - THEY should be the ones who get shot!
By Cammie.. Posted August 30 2009 at 11:58 AM.
This is a horrific story and makes you wonder how these people sleep at night knowing that they are causing excruciating pain to such beautiful, innocent animals. But thank you News of the World for printing this story because at least it promotes animal welfare and brings people to the reality of what a sick world we sometimes live in.
I've donated £15.00, please for every single person who reads this article please donate- even if it's only couple of pounds, then just maybe you can save these lions and help give them the happy and healthy lives that they deserve here in the Uk.
