MEET the dog you'll never teach to beg - Alsatian Gunther, the world's wealthiest pet.

With a staggering £224 million, plus a Miami mansion for a kennel, he tops the 2009 Pet Rich List unveiled today.

The survey by insurance giant Petplan reveals Gunther wolfs down dinners of caviar, steak and truffles served by a butler and army of servants.

He inherited a fortune from his dad who was left ruffly £43 million by his German countess owner in 1992.

But canny canine investment has put Gunther at No 1, way ahead of No 2 - Kalu the South African rescue chimp. Once she didn't have two ape knees to rub together but now sits on £53 million, a legacy from devoted owner Patricia O'Neill.

Lend us a monkey, Kalu!

Back in Britain Gigoo the hen - bankrolled from the will of publishing tycoon Miles Blackwell - is left scratching around at No 4 on a poultry £10 million, mere chicken feed. And full details on www.petraitgallery.co.uk reveal that, at No 20, Silverstone the tortoise is slowly nibbling his way through £100,000 left by English bookshop queen Christina Foyle.

Hope they all spare a thought for the paw people.

I think he deserves every cent. I don't have that kind of
money but I have a will leaving everything to my poodle.

It's the owner's money, he can do whatever he wants with it. I never knew though a dog can be THAT high maintenance. It is silly though. Of course loyalty should be rewarded, no doubt about that but so much money for a dog ... wouldn't all that open itself to abuse?

Think I have to agree with Simons comments, with so much homelessness and starvation in the world as much as I love my pets Id never be leaving them that kind of cash if I had it! This is ridicuolous a dog that eats steak, truffles and caviar! come on give it a tin of chappie much better for his digestive system lol

Stephen:

"Just maybe Gunther was a true friend and is now
enjoying the fruits of his loyalty."

Did you bother to read the story or was it just to difficult for you to understand?

I completely agree with Stephen :o)

Perhaps the other people who have commented have never benefitted from the unconditional love from a dog - try it guys, then you might just understand why Gunther is worth every penny!

If I had £224 million I'd give it to my GSD!

They are the most loyal, loving, gorgeous, intellingent dogs who I would recommend to anyone looking for a dog - the only shame is that the owner didn't leave just enough for Gunther to have his life of luxury but donate the rest to the poor other sheppies abandoned all over the world! (I rescued one of them but there are so many out there who still need a loving home - please consider them if you are looking - the best thing I ever did was to adopt mine)

xx

Simon, i always remember my father telling me
if you fall on hard times your Dog will be there
when your friends will not.

Just maybe Gunther was a true friend and is now
enjoying the fruits of his loyalty.

Oh and what people do with their money is
their own affair.

When there are millions of people in the world, homeless and going hungry, I have never read anything so disgusting in my life, than a dog eating caviar, steak and truffles!

An outrage!

What sad and deluded person would leave a pet these vast amounts of money. Ok, so you should provide for a loved pet but over £10,000 is excessive.

Lucky for him he's not kennelled in Gordon's Britain then. I suppose he'll still be invited onto one of Mandelson's committees pretty soon.
