The bankrupt cameraman made headlines around the globe when he went missing on a fishing trip, leaving cancer survivor Olivia heartbroken after a nine-year romance.
McDermott was widely assumed to have fallen overboard and drowned. But investigators hired to solve the mystery have long suspected McDermott STAGED his death to escape debts and cash in on a life insurance scam.
And now in a major breakthrough they have received a letter faxed on his behalf, insisting he is ALIVE, WELL, INNOCENT and begging: "Stop this search immediately!"
Singer Olivia, 60 - once romantically linked to Cliff Richard - found new love with herb tycoon John Easterling a year ago.
But the hunt for McDermott went on. And, as well as the fax, the probe team led by private eye Philip Klein have had three phone calls from his representatives since February.
After demanding further proof Texas-based Klein has now received a photograph of his 52-year-old quarry, with hair dyed black in a bid to change his appearance. Dramatic new evidence discovered by detectives and the US Coast Guard also reveals how McDermott PLANNED his disappearance for at least six months - clinching a second passport in his birth name Patrick Kim - and WITHDREW life savings from two bank accounts before vanishing.
The fax dated February 10 insists McDermott fled the California spotlight for a life with less hassle. It adds: "Pat asked that I portray to you his innocence in the crimes you have accused him of. Pat has committed no crime. . . Pat simply wishes to be left alone. . .
"Let him live his life in peace and harmony. He is safe and has started anew again in a new place both mentally and physically."
In fact the dectectives' dossier shows McDermott now works as a deckhand in the small Mexican fishing town of Sayulita - a magnet for surfers and drifters and those wishing to escape their past. When not on the move he stays at a £20-a-night beachside motel, always in the same room, No 10.
Investigator Klein believes the McDermott middleman - identified simply as 'Cacma D' - is "100 per cent credible".
He added: "This case is now 94 per cent solved. The remaining six per cent is to actually see McDermott sitting in front of my face."

Evidence is really starting to show that in deed he is alive. I say leave the guy alone. I feel sympathy for his family and especially his son bt for some reason he felt in his heart, enough pain to cause him to check out. Another thing, perhaps his loved ones new he was checking out. It tok 10 days to report him missing and 7 weeks for Olivia Newton John to even comment about his disappearance though they were not a coupl when he disappeared, they had been for 9 years. She would have been pleading for information don't you think??

Coward to up and leave like that. Olivia you are better than that and so are the rest of his family and friends who obviously meant a lot to him.

Take him at his word Olivia, especially when he inevitably runs out of money again, or is, once found, taken back to the US for possible fraud charges or similar.
Don't be daft enough to pay his legal bill because by the sound of it, it is likely to prove huge.

Hmmmm....leave him alone? He owes money and he's worried and hurt people.
Who the hell does he think he is? Above the law?
Newton-John is better off without him obviously.

Um imagine how his son feels upon hearing his father is indeed alive and has chosen to check out of his life to find 'peace and harmony'?? What a way to avoid paying child support! What a disgusting, vile human being..he broke hearts in making the selfish choice to disappear. Shame on him and I hope he is dragged back to American soil and put in jail for evading child support payments.

Olivia Newton John was the first woman i had a crush on. She doesn't look 60 now, she looks like a 45 year old.

How could he do this to her, she was devastated? What kind of a cretin does that - we all have debts but we sort them out.
"Let him live his life in peace and harmony", unlike the mess he left for the people behind, why should he live in peace, i hope they jail the *"**"**. There is no reason on earth to do this to the people you are supposed to love, there is nothing that can't be sorted.
He is just a coward and i'm glad she finally found someone good.
She is well rid if you ask me.

This is just the work of sick publicity seekers who enjoy other people's misery, nothing more, nothing less.

He had his reasons for doing what he did, but he must have caused a lot of souls a lot of pain. He needs to make his peace with those his actions hurt, then get down to writing the book....please. It'll clear any debts and give him something worthwhile to do; he may have to write it in prison.
