What David Beckham really said to LA Galaxy fan

Image Flag

WE don't mean to point the finger at old Goldenbawls, but . . .

Here's a different look at last week's controversial confrontation between David Beckham and an angry fan - in which the star says he was Mr Innocence.

New footage of David Beckham's confrontation with LA Galaxy fan

However, our exclusive video replay above - taken from a different angle to any other footage - shows Becks seemingly losing it as the angry crowd hurl abuse at him.

Snarling

In the previously unseen video he snarls the word "f*****" at taunting ringleader, Josh Paige.

Then as Beckham approaches the advertising hoardings, he demands Paige "come down here" and threatens to "show him" if he does.

The footage was shot during the 2-2 draw between his team LA Galaxy and AC Milan - the club he controversially went to on loan to save his England career.

After studying it two experts were able to accurately lip read Becks' outburst. It appears the star raged at Paige: "Hey you, here, come on down here. Come on down, yes, YOU, down, yeah, yeah, you. You watch it, f*****. I'll SHOW you if you come down."

BECK OFF: Paige is restrained
BECK OFF: Paige is restrained

Beckham - nicknamed Goldenballs - has taken flak from some American soccer fans for his apparent lack of interest in LA Galaxy.

They voiced their displeasure at the former England skipper with a barrage of boos. It seems Becks took exception to something that was shouted to him about his family at half-time, and he confronted a section of the crowd.

Beckham - who was fined £600 by the MLS league for his outburst - had to be held back by security men as he seemed about to vault the barrier to get closer to his tormentors.

When Paige also made a move, he too was pinned down by officials. After the game, Beckham defended his actions, saying: "One of the guys stepped over the line. I said, 'You need to calm down and shake my hand and he jumped over."

The official footage - show on British TV - makes it impossible to see what Beckham said to Paige in the build up to his outburst.

But our exclusive video shots, taken by a fan from a different angle, shows what Becks is saying as he approached a 400-strong section of Galaxy fans, known as the Riot Squad. And the UK's top forensic lip reader Marianne Frere translated what the 34-year-old free-kick legend REALLY said.

Profoundly-deaf Marianne said: "Beckham is absolutely furious - 'steaming' is the word I'd use.

"His body language as he walks up is tense and aggressive - it brings to mind a coiled spring.

"He speaks the words he says harshly, aggressively and you can tell from the amount of energy that he is putting into his speech, which is reflected in his facial muscles, that he is shouting in a very macho alpha male manner."

Galaxy fan Eric Lewis said: "He called the guy out. How stupid is that? He's the player, he's the professional. He should have kept himself under control and he didn't.

Banned

Last night, a friend of David Beckham said: "Things got pretty heated. But David offered to shake the fan's hand.

"He is passionate guy and cares deeply about the game.

"It is why he went to Italy in the first place, so that he could prolong his England career.

"Clearly a small section of the Galaxy fans were not happy about that and David respects their views."tom.latchem@notw.co.uk

In all fairness beckham went to a league equivalent to our 2nd division and payed the price. Money talks people...and it shouted at beckham. All he can hope for now is a large bid to come in from a better more capable team.
And as for people bringing up the war on a david beckham article....leave it out, We all lost people in that conflict and who care who saved who, just get on with life and help prevent another one happening.
PS - i'm british, love football, have good teeth and eat good english food....so drop the stereotypes.

By Craig.. Posted August 21 2009 at 8:15 PM.

Becks knew there wasn't any chance of anyone getting near to him. When there were all those officials around.

I think he would have run mile if the guy had got over the fence. All fur coat, no knickers?

By b.. Posted August 16 2009 at 12:22 AM.

Why do the British keep thinking it's all about Beckham being from England. I guarantee you if Beckham was putting in a honest effort and/or even better making a big difference in the team's success fans would be loving the guy over here. It has everything to do with substance and results. But when a fan see a player put the success of the team secondary to many things like his image, money, aspirations for other leagues/teams this is what you get. Lets flip this and lets say an American did the same in England only went there for the money and his heart was not in it and his play was sub par. How well do you think it would go over with the British?? Use some basic common sense and stop complaining about Americans... Or just admit you don't like Americans period for whatever justifiable or ignorant reasons you may have. What is so funny is that Football is the #1 major sport of England and they talk down about American having a poor sports league which is true but come on in the last several years America's International team has been better then England's. How sad is that for England! Just because you have a good league does not mean anything. Those top players are mostly imports. All England has is fans that support the economics of paying high salaries for the best players in the world to come play in your league. I don't see anything to brag about when it comes to that. With that all said to be fair Englad has some great people and lots to be proud of.

David leave the country and come back to England your proper home where you are respected..

im sory but if anyone mentioned my wife and kid i wouldnt wait for them to come down ill go up my self and knock him out...

I reckon he should come to the one and onle MAN UTD.. come one becks stand up for your self...

He 'offered to shake the guys hand'... LOL! That has to be the most pathetic attempt at 'saving face' I've heard all year.

By Chris Froughton.. Posted August 9 2009 at 10:36 AM.

Well, i'm shocked by all this. I honestly thought that americans were on our side. The rubbish i've read by our so called "cousins" "allies" "friends" are disrespectful and shameful. Maybe our prime minister should take a look at all this and then ask himself why should our boys spill more blood in afganistan for the sake of people who don't like us. After 9\11 we were the first there for you lot, and we have been since. Were your strongest allies by far. Just like you were there for us in ww2, diffrence is we came much earlier when you needed someone then you did for us.
Most countries can't stand USA, britain are one of your only friends..........for now.

By Chazz.. Posted August 6 2009 at 1:47 AM.

You are all crazy. Football, soccer or whatever. Both sports are meant to be enjoyed. Get some beer and go to bed!!! Idiots

By Sheyi.. Posted August 4 2009 at 12:56 AM.

So it's OK for Beckham to shout obscenities as a professional footballer on global TV, to the bad behaviour of the paying crowd, but not for Drogba to do it after intense frustration at the appalling behaviour of a so called professional referee? Yeah right. That makes sense. NOT. No matter any which way you twist it - either both are right, or both a wrong. Don't twist it just to suit your prejudices. And it's a 'football', not a 'soccer' ball! 'Soccer' is a nickname for the beautiful game.

By Gandalf.. Posted August 3 2009 at 9:13 PM.

For a nation of "numptys" who call football soccer you deseve nothing better, becks should have "spanked the yank" lol

everyone slagging becks off here are stupid, it doesnt matter if hes a pro or just a sunday league footballer, if someone starts slagging my wife and kids off im defently going to loose my cool. hes too good for yanky soccer, you guys say us english want to be you and play your sports well baseball is dead boring, youguys play american football with pads whilst we play rugby with little if any protection, can seperate the boys from the men just saying that. anyway well done beckham come back to England where you belong

Well done becks, next time make sure you chin the stupid yank muppet about time they got knocked down a peg or two

By stu.. Posted August 2 2009 at 12:10 PM.

David Beckham is is an over-rated has been. He peaked as a player at about 23 and has done very little since. Its true he can hit a ball well, but he is too slow to get into the positions where he can actually do anything with it.

He went to the US to cash in, because he thought at the time his England career was coming to an end. Now that he is getting some bit-parts again, he thinks he needs to play in Europe.

Please can you keep him (and his wife) in the US.

And can we also stop going on about the war. Yes the US were instrumental in the defeat of Hitler, Italy and Japan. But the Soviet Union and the (British) Empire were too. It was a joint effort.

Rant over. Have a nice day !

Oh my gosh,
I am a "war baby" My Dad was a yank .I have 3 1/2 brothers in America so I hate to hear nasty things said about Americans...however...I must stick up for David Becks. If people knew how much the lad does for kids charities they might be more inclined to like the chap.Another point is, I know how much you Americans love the U.S.A. well you see Beckham is so loyal to his country the same way you are, so we adore him here.He has played his heart out for us, and not always been given the credit for it. I personally would love to thank him for all the great games he has given us, and please media...STOP KNOCKING HIM. Good luck David in whatever you do.

He challenges someone to come down to him with 10 security people around him then feebly tries to jump a foam barrier. Coward.

At least in hockey they go get the SOB in the stands, then beat him up with his own shoe. See Mike Milbury and Boston Bruins brawl in the 70's.

Don't make me laugh Americans, Brits are hard, as a nation we are notorious for that, David Beckham is a son of England and was one of the best football players in history. He reacted because of the amount of stick he has to deal with, whether it be people talking about his wife or telling him he can't play football. Americans make football dull, If you come to England you will see the greatest league to grace this planet with the most exciting games.

Get off your high horse Americans and learn the following:

1. The art of sarcasm
2. Dry humour
3. We are your Forefathers not the reverse
4. Your nation relies of status and prestige and for that it makes you one of the most boring, weird and tasteless nations on Earth.

GOD SAVE THE QUEEN!

By Jack.. Posted July 27 2009 at 12:16 AM.

Beckham was, and still is, one of the finest footballers of the modern game. His teamwork, passing ability and strength on and off the field is a credit. Yes, he lost his rag a little here, but it shows his passion. Truthfully, the MLS is not a place he should be. The standard of football in that league isn't high. He should be in England, Spain or Italy. And that is a fact. He wants his England career, and I want him in the England squad. If his so called "supporters" can't accept the fact he wants to play for his national team, then that's their wrong doing.

By Carl.. Posted July 27 2009 at 12:38 AM.

It's funny how you guys are yelling stuff at each other when in reality you would probably get along very well.

I have lived in the USA for the past 5 years and I can tell you they are a nice bunch of people.

It's funny when people talk about soccer being a girls sport and then bring up football. If you ever watched Rugby you would understand.

The fans have the right to do what they like within reason and I think they are justified. Beckham needs to hold his tongue and show what he can do on the pitch.

Actually the fattest country is America, but just go to Colorado or California and your be fine....it's the other states that knock that little number up.

We all have our own thoughts, but America have a right to watch their sports as we have a right the follow the most popular sport in the world bar none.

When it comes down to it.....we all like to have a good time no matter where we are from. Yanks or Brits.

RELAX!

By Marc.. Posted July 27 2009 at 12:55 AM.

football, the worlds sport, will never make it in the usa. the americans can not handle a sport where the players must perform continuosly for 45'. american football requires breaks, getting out the measuring tape...etc. baseball has other forms of breaks. all the breaks allow for the television networks to display commercials.
american football players are not able to perform for extended period of time due to the types of atheletes and drugs and training involved. most of the time the athelete is sitting on the sideline and waiting for their moment to go in and perform.
americans do not have the stamina for rugby or football.
as for baseball. same arguement here. the players are among the worst shaped atheletes in the world. the trick is hitting the ball well enough to get on a base 90' away. thats it! wait for your team mate to do the same....then run to the next base. they may as well have a beer on them while they are running from base to base! maybe some smokes!
as it is turning out americans are not doing well in many sports. basketball? europeans, especially the greeks, are taking away the u.s. glory there. volleyball? same story. baseball? please....latin americans have it wrapped up there.

By prince phillip.. Posted July 27 2009 at 12:46 AM.

It is entertaining reading some of the soccer vs. NFL comments, or how boring baseball is remarks. Sports are popular for different reasons to different people. It should not be made into a childish argument about WWII or some of the other ridiculous statements many have made. Fact is many of these sports are promoted because of our culture. In America soccer is just not that popular. Maybe in the future there will be room for soccer to be as respected as some of the other sports, but this will be a long time off. Same goes for other parts of the world for American sports. It all depends on whether you can develop a fan base and make it mainstream.

By Danny.. Posted July 27 2009 at 1:02 AM.

"As far as your football vs. ours:
Every kid can play soccer: That makes it an activity, like bowling, not a sport!"

Idiot. Every kid can play T-ball too. That doesn't mean baseball itself is some easy "activity." Youth soccer doesn't even remotely resemble the actual sport. Youth soccer = T-ball.

I swear, some of you Americans are making me question my own love of baseball and football. It's like, my God, are these sports only for dimwitted idiots?

By Tom.. Posted July 26 2009 at 11:33 PM.

To john the ignorant one...

American football is much more dangerous than rugby. The hits are brutal. Scientists have shown that a collision in the NFL is equivalent to a head on car accident at 35 miles per hour. I would take a benchwarming NFL offensive lineman against your toughest rugby any day of the week. But you are ignorant so I forgive you.

The World Series is played in America and Canada by players from all over the world. We have players from Japan, all of Central and South America, Australia, Canada, Korea, even India has players coming to the US to play. Because you are ignorant, you think the game is played only by Americans in America.

By B-52.. Posted July 26 2009 at 11:27 PM.

America is a nation of individuals who cherish their independence. For this reason, I was very saddened that the US beat Spain. The latter a team who actually cherishes this commie sport. If we continue to beat teams that care about "soccer," then those other nations might mistakenly think WE CARE about this utterly dull sport. That would be a travesty. :-(

By Hugh.. Posted July 26 2009 at 11:54 PM.

The reason there are so many little American kids playing soccer is so they don't have to watch it. As soon as they get to make their own decisions they pick American sports to play and watch. That's the plain truth. Sorry if this truth hurts the feelings of the English soccer fans. So, maybe it would be better for all if Beckham left toute de suite and forgot about his mega contract.

By John.. Posted July 26 2009 at 10:55 PM.

Little boy Beckham wouldn't last 10 seconds in a NFL game.

In the NFL, men break bones, concussions, paralyzed, etc.

In Euro Soccer? Little boys act like drama queens, flop on the field, cry like babies, etc.

There is no comparison.

By Soccer Sucks.. Posted July 26 2009 at 10:45 PM.

Beckham never was any good, he's just a big girls' blouse, and having a go at a spectator like he did just goes to prove that he lacks backbone and can't take the heat and is extremely immature. It's small wonder America is sick to death of him, he has screwed up every team he's played in.

By Lorna Wanstall.. Posted July 26 2009 at 11:10 PM.

Beckham is washed up as a soccer star, that's why he came to the US to play in a much lesser league. As a man, he acts much like a spoiled brat.

By john.. Posted July 26 2009 at 10:38 PM.

If Yanks are so tough why do they wear helmets and a rollcage or a massive novelty mitten?

Years ago some rugby players played American Football and got padded up, yet the namby pamby fairies refused to play rugby without their protection as it was too dangerous.

In a fight the likes of Martin Johnson, Will Greenwood would easily destroy the pansies that play NFL. Erm, I can't name any though.

Rounders has a World Series yet no other country plays it as it lasts for days and is more boring than watching paint dry.

Still if doughnut eating was a sport the Yanks would be World Champs

By Ferdy.. Posted July 26 2009 at 10:07 PM.

I was 20 feet away when that happened and Becks wasn't just being yelled at by 1 or 2 fans like he said it was thousands who were booing him and for good reason. They weren't saying anything about his family he is a liar. He comes to L.A. and realizes he is a little fish in a big pond so he tries to go back on his word and weasel out of his contract. You can't blame our dedicated fans for booing someone who they were so excited to have play here only to have Becks talk trash about our programs and turn his back on the fans. He should have waited until he was 37 to come to America but now we don't want him to ever come back. America will embrace and be loyal to anyone until you try to screw us

By darrels.. Posted July 26 2009 at 10:24 PM.

Great post Richard. It shows an actual depth of thought that seems to be lacking on many of these posts. One can actually like many of the sports, while having specific opinions on how/why one may be more entertaining than the other; and oddly enough, you didnt make your argument by trashing an entire culture/country. Well done.

On the contrary, Nicholas, you're either a very foolish and naive Englishman or a self-hating American. Rednecks in L.A.? You obviously haven't visited. "Lack of culture"? Grow up man. "Hmmm, how do I win an argument about David Beckham.... Oh yeah, say America has no culture"

By Gene.. Posted July 26 2009 at 10:22 PM.

I don't know who is more pathetic... the ugly Americans trying to kiss ass the Eurotrash with statements such as "As an American who lived in Roma for many years, I can attest to the beauty of a well-played game." (If your statement is in English, not Italian, isn't that Rome?)

or the pathetic Brits who thinks that they sent the US a national treasure! He is a money grubbing spoiled little boy who should have stayed in Europe where he is liked, although I do remember a lot of talk that he is overated, even before he came to LA.
As far as your football vs. ours:
Every kid can play soccer: That makes it an activity, like bowling, not a sport!
40 Years ago, it was introduced at the middle school and high school level. It still hasn't caught on...never has, never will.

As a Yank. I've seen my share of NFL football, basketball and baseball and I am a fan of teams in each of those professional sports leagues. However, I personally think that soccer or football as it should be rightfully called is the most entertaining sport to follow. The EPL is the best league in the world as far as I'm concerned. I was at a Dodgers baseball game just the last week and nearly fell asleep being that we were so far from the action and the players weren't even making any contact with the pitches for the longest time. As for Becks, he'll be able to do well in the MLS because the level of play is far lower than the EPL or La Liga but he's done beyond that.

Good grief. What is wrong with some of my fellow Americans on here? What does the NFL have to do with anything? Why aren't you on basketball forums talking about how NFL players could "beat up" NBA players? Why aren't you on baseball forums talking about how the NFL is superior to MLB?

In other words, what does gridiron football have to do with soccer? Why does the comparison even cross your mind? How is it relevant?

You people are fools. I love American football, baseball, basketball AND soccer. They're all great sports, and exciting in their own different ways. For God's sake, it's like soccer disrespected your mom or something... so much stupid, kneejerk hatred. It's WEIRD.

By Tom.. Posted July 26 2009 at 6:25 PM.

Having read the insulting comments from both Americans and British, may I say the only intelligent remarks I have read are those from jlbrpt who draws to our attention that soldiers from both our countries are fighting and dying side by side in the conflicts in Iran and Afghanistan. As an elderly British woman who lived through WW2 - and lost both my mother who died in an air raid and my soldier brother fighting in Germany - I know how much we owe the Americans.Their contribution to the war effort should never be underestimated and without them we would not enjoy the freedom we now have. Both our nations gave of their best and it should never be forgotten the sacrifices made and the appalling losses sustained. The Americans may not be perfect any more than we are but they are and always will be the best friends we could have. As for David Beckham and all the vocal football fans,do please calm down. It is only a game and is SUPPOSED to be a SPORT. Your correspondents from both sides of the pond need to stop insulting each other and leave each to enjoy their own particular games. May I just take to task the comments made by Diana regarding British food. It must be a long time since you dined in British restaurants as our chefs are regarded as some of the finest and many are now training French cooks.

By Perle Beaumont.. Posted July 26 2009 at 6:23 PM.

@Simon: There are so many Americans posting on here because this story was linked to by a popular American news aggregator. Not because Americans care at all about soccer, but because most Americans are interested in celebrities behaving badly.

@ricardi: It's true that baseball is the slowest and most boring of the three major American sports, but at least, unlike soccer, a team is required to win every game. Steroids is a big problem in many sports because they've become so lucrative to play at the highest level. However, the size of the players doesn't make it any less enjoyable. Football is a dangerous contact sport, and the players wear helmets and pads because they were dying without them when the sport was first invented.

@footballnothandball: It's funny that you would call baseball a "sissy's game" because girls play something similar in England. Soccer is played by "girlies" all around the world, even at the Olympic level. On the other hand, I've never seen a women's football league nor a woman playing football at even the collegiate level. The reason is not because they're not allowed, but because too violent and women would get killed.

By Jane.. Posted July 26 2009 at 6:35 PM.

I am in awe of British courage and gallantry shown during the Battle for Britain. Nonetheless, it was the vast resources of AMERICAN strength, money and blood that ultimately saved Britain and France. Our soldiers' are buried on your shores. Fact !
Your mind-boggling ingratitude toward American sacrifice disqualifies you from any discussion of this subject.

By chaffer.. Posted July 26 2009 at 5:29 PM.

Yanks get a load of this. YOU bought becks for $250m so if you don't like what you got then tough. As for American football and basball, we play that here: rugby and rounders. calling soccer a sissy's game? Look at your poxy baseball what the lads at school play here in England is called rounders and is a sissy's game we play in summer with the girlies. Why do you need to dress up with helmets and shoulder pads for every game you play? Dumass Yanks

By footballnotHandball.. Posted July 26 2009 at 6:20 PM.

Americans do care about soccer, every single child in america grows up playing it. We "suck" at international soccer because up until ten years ago, good american high school athletes play football in the fall, basketball in the winter, and baseball in the spring.

No room for soccer.

Now that the US actually has a pro soccer league worth playing in, kids are starting to think they have a chance to make money playing pro soccer, so now our young players are getting better.

Didnt the US just beat the best team in the world and almost beat the second best team in the world? The last notable thing England did was miss the Euro Cup.

And for the record, Churchill was begging us to enter the war. we didnt want to.

@Damien Kane "The fan paid to get in, and didn't break any laws." Is that all we are requiring from people now? My goodness what has happened to our civilization...

ok, just a quickie
why are there so many americans commenting on an article from a british newspapers website?
how silly

By Simon.. Posted July 26 2009 at 6:15 PM.

Are these comments in any sort of logical order? What a mess.

Yes, baseball and american football, where all players are on prohibited drugs and their bodies are artificially built with steroids. Nice sports indeed!. Baseball is full of fat steroid-induced folks , rarely anyone runs making it the most boring sport to practice and watch, and american football well, 90% players are even fatter with more steroids than Schwarezenegger and Hulk put together. Add the fact that they are wearing helmets and can not see what goes around them.

By ricardi totti.. Posted July 26 2009 at 6:01 PM.

The MLS can borrow its team names and (fading) stars from other leagues and its fans can co-opt the traditions of other firms, but the contrived lot of them will never be more than cave wall shadows. I'd watch the mediocre talent if the spectacle was at least accompanied by some genuine fervor and not not just blatant chimping.

By steve-o.. Posted July 26 2009 at 6:00 PM.

David who...? They have professional(?) soccer here in America? Guess I was too busy watching real sports to have noticed.

By Whatever.. Posted July 26 2009 at 5:51 PM.

I don't like the way certain fans mouth off and hurl all manner of abuse at players with some presumption that since the players are the "professionals" they must restrain themselves and endure the taunts, bravado, and boorish behavior. The players are human too and I don't see why we expect them to let antagonistic losers in the stands insult their families, honor, etc. Some fans deserve a good thrashing.

I don't fault Beckham at all, although of course, it would have been best for him simply to try to ignore the fat jerk.

By BfromUSA.. Posted July 26 2009 at 6:13 PM.

he should complete his contract in la.then retire the amercians will love him.he is all washed anyway now.give a young person a chance to play football

By geoff.. Posted July 26 2009 at 6:10 PM.

1. Baseball is beyond boring seriously !
2. "Football" is played in south america, "European sissy-boys" - hmmm doesnt really work.
3. WWII - One main reason it started was due to the failure of the league of nations. Who made the League ? "Woodrow Wilson USA" and then you left because you was and still are the same selfish country you are today. So in saying that WELL DONE for helping us out haha !

By kyle q.. Posted July 26 2009 at 5:48 PM.

I for one love the english premier league, it is the best in the world! Mls is a freakin joke, boring dull and really quite slow, 2 hours of spongbob will leave you with a better outlook for the day. I like playing soccer i have for years it is a fun game, but all this copy cat crap from the mls makes me feel embarrassed for this sport, dc united, dallas fc, real salt lake cut me some freakin slack, give me the atlanta falcons, dallas cowboys, st louis rams thats FOOTBALL! everything else is kickball.

By shindiggy.. Posted July 26 2009 at 5:44 PM.

It's funny that an average little shlub in the stands had to be restrained by a half dozen security guards from fighting the world's most famous professional soccer player. Not many NFL fans have ever been restrained from attacking a player because the fans know they would get the crap beaten out of them.

By Dude.. Posted July 26 2009 at 4:51 PM.

Of course more countries play soccer than football. Soccer only requires a round ball and some open space, perfect for all the poor third-world countries that Britain and Spain conquered. We broke away from British tyranny a couple hundred years ago and eschewed most things British, including soccer. We created our own sports that we're perfectly happy with. LA Galaxy has gotten what it deserves by being the latest American soccer team to try to lure a washed up soccer has-been to come here to die, and that's fine because he'll make them a few dollars parading around as a side-show act. Soccer will never be more than the fourth or fifth most popular team sport here, and I'm perfectly fine with that. I've got more important things to do than watch another 0-0 tie.

By C.P... Posted July 26 2009 at 5:05 PM.

beckrabbit,

Without "American industrial might" there NEVER WOULD HAVE BEEN a Hitler.

Incorrect. The rise of Hitler and the entire Nazi movement was a direct result of the treaty of Versailles and the unfair blame the allies, (ie. France and the UK) put on Germany, causing the Germany enconomy to collapse even futher during the depresstion of the late 1920's throught the 30's. They expected Geremany to pay off most the war debt. This unfair treatment and the insistance that France and the UK keep their colonial possessions was the main reason the US wanted no part in the League of Nations and returned to isolationism. Welcome the type of hopeless environment that a man like Hitler could thrive in.

"I.G. Farben, the pharmaceutical behemoth that developed the gas chamber poisons among other Nazi chemical weapons, had a high number of Americans on their board of directors."

This logic is crazy. So let me get this striaght, a pharmaceutical company that employes Americans (*according to you*) and develops "weapons" makes the US partly responsible for the Nazi movement and the Holocost?

"Wall Street underwrote the loans to German industrialists for the acquisition of the mines used to produce the iron and other metals needed for the Nazi war machine."

That is the dumbest comment yet. So America is to blame because we gave loans to industrialists to open mines? LOL What about the UK and France doing NOTHING as Hitler re-armed?

By Scott.. Posted July 26 2009 at 5:01 PM.

soccer sucks. those euro-weenies wouldn't stand a chance in the NFL.

By mean greene.. Posted July 26 2009 at 5:12 PM.

Becks would never have gone to the states if he thought he could still be playing for England, he needs to bail asap and play for AC Milan full time, or a top club in Spain or England, if they dont want ya back in LA then they are crazy, they should be grateful your willing to play in that league one of the biggest names in the world of football.

and on a side note, "american football" is simply a girls version of Rugby (no padding) which is played in many more countries then the kid like american version of rugby.

Difference between american sports and the rest of the world, to be a WORLD CHAMPTION in the other sports, you have to actually beat all the other teams in the world, to be a world champion in an american sport, you just have to beat the other american teams playing because nobody else in the world cares haha

:)

By simon.. Posted July 26 2009 at 5:21 PM.

As an American who lived in Roma for many years, I can attest to the beauty of a well-played game. When you're watching a game of two mediocre teams, however, it can be dull as dishwater. One reason 'soccer' (sorry, Brits) has not caught on in the States is because it does not lend itself very well to American television, which demands commercial breaks every five minutes. That, plus the fact that unfortunately US fans are not interested in sports in which we don't excel. That being said, Beckham knew when he signed with the Galaxy that he wasn't going to be playing European calibre football. He came here for the money. Galaxy paid all that money for him so they could make more money...the novelty of having Lord Beckham. And I'm sure Posh couldn't wait to get to Hollywood to rub elbows with our celeb aristocracy. Now that she knows her sour puss won't be getting her any movie contracts and he knows he's been relegated to playing Series C football, they're disenchanted. Should have thought of that before they accepted all that cash.

By Diane.. Posted July 26 2009 at 4:34 PM.

Why are the British so obsessed with all things American? Let it go. No one here cares for soccer, its beyond boring. And it's true, no one in England could ever get fat. Your food is beyond terrible. Who wants to eat it? What was it that I heard, your only contribution to the culinary world was mad cow disease?

By USA.. Posted July 26 2009 at 4:36 PM.

From Richard:

"The Soviets provided the manpower but it was American industrial might that finished the Nazis. Without American industrial might, and the second front opened by the USA, the Soviets would have been crushed by the Nazis and Europe would be under Nazi control today."

Without "American industrial might" there NEVER WOULD HAVE BEEN a Hitler.

A) Standard Oil provided patented synthetic fuel technology to the Nazis while denying that same technology to the US government, among other highly sensitive technological advancements.

B) Wall Street underwrote the loans to German industrialists for the acquisition of the mines used to produce the iron and other metals needed for the Nazi war machine.

C) I.G. Farben, the pharmaceutical behemoth that developed the gas chamber poisons among other Nazi chemical weapons, had a high number of Americans on their board of directors.

As far as Beckham... maybe he was telling that guy about Britain's role in WWII

By beckrabbit.. Posted July 26 2009 at 4:06 PM.

look at the yanks turn around and insult us brits and our football and how many world cups have you won?! oh yeah i remember 0!! Beckham is absolute quality I am a footie mad fan! and i cant think of any american that can knock a ball like david. All you brainless yanks have to grow up and respect Becks and leave him alone!!
BECKS FOR ENGLAND WORLD CUP!! LEAVE SCUMMY LA GALAXY AND JOIN A GREAT CLUB LIKE LIVERPOOL FC!! =D

By Ben.. Posted July 26 2009 at 4:12 PM.

Right, I thought I'd jump in here and stop this wholesale American attempt to re-write history (just like how they reported the last Olympics table in order of AMOUNT of medals, not the official Point tally meaning the USA won and China came second, whereas in reality China WON [but diddums the fat yanks couldn't handle that fact])

- Lie 1:
If it wasn't for the Americans we'd be speaking German.

- Truth 1:
I'd strongly recommend reading up on "Operation Sealion". After the Battle of Britain, Hilter straight up gave up on ever conquering Britain. Fact.

The only thing the Americans and (imho more so) the Russians did was fight side by side with the Brits to help free Europe. Not "save Britain" - we'd already done that rather well on our own thanks.

(For the record to end further arguments, in the 1974 wargames where all possibilities of the war were tested, even without winning the battle of Britain it was tested and proved [as far as it could have been] that any invasion of Britain would have failed.

But, carry on trying to re-write history.

By R Mouth.. Posted July 26 2009 at 4:09 PM.

How many countries in the world play soccer?

FIFA has 208 official countries registered, which means any of them can be the 32 countries that get selected in the World Cup. Besides this, there are also several other countries that play soccer, but are not registered in FIFA.

How many countries play American Football?

Currently, 45 associations in North and South America, Europe, Asia and Oceania are organized within the IFAF.

By Paul.. Posted July 26 2009 at 4:15 PM.

These are some of the most pathetic comments I've ever read! A lot of you need to grow up and stop slagging off the UK/US just because a British footballer lost his temper at a fan in America!

By Mike M.. Posted July 26 2009 at 3:46 PM.

You Euros can't handle the fact that we ARE YOU... descended FROM YOU...200 years later. We dumped your petty aristocracies and cruel dictatorships, allowed religious freedom, personal liberties, and entrepreneurialism to flourish. God protect us from the socialist thug who now has control of our government. May we never go back to what YOU have become.

By chaffer.. Posted July 26 2009 at 3:45 PM.

Can u brits take ur soccer ball and stick it up your behind. That would be more interesting to watch than a bunch of sissy boys prancing around a field doing nothing.

By Edna.. Posted July 26 2009 at 3:52 PM.

Good onto the Americans! Beckham went there for the money. An overrated, past his best footballer who turned his back on the Galaxy fans and headed off to Italy as soon as he thought a better offer came along. Prolong his England career? He's practically a cheerleader these days, brought on with only a couple of minutes to go to satisfy the sponsors. Americans maybe wont ever 'get' football but they can spot a phoney.

British people, stop being jealous of us! Stop being angry at us. Spend more time on dental care and Stop trying to make us like this "sport" you call football. Look, no one here really likes soccer. It's for stuck up surburban kids that can't play real sports. No one cares about Euro sissy boys kicking a ball around. We don't. Just get over it. Oh and thanks for the insults too. As you well know, Americans don't care what you Brits think. We never have and never will whereas you guy spend lots of time still seething about the war which more than likely, no of you were there anyways.

By Teddy.. Posted July 26 2009 at 3:10 PM.

Ah you Brits are so jealous of Americans that it's pathetic. You take a David Beckham incident to use against us to call us all kinds of names. At the end of the day, you follow behind us and copy everything we "YANKS" do. And I do mean everything. You Brits are so far up American's behinds that you can't see straight. We don't like SOCCER! No all-American straight male is going to sit through the most boring sport ever invented. Americans could care less that you call it football and insult our sports. But I think you guys know that which infuriates you more. Stop trying to force this crap sport on us. We don't like it!

By Lisa.. Posted July 26 2009 at 3:00 PM.

Gijoe, for your imformation the 250 million dollars that Becks was reputed to have been paid did not all come from LA Galaxy,a large proportion of it came from sponsership deals weras the actual amount he got from LA Galaxy was probably less then he could have got from a European team>not only thatI think you will find that he has already paid for himself in increased shirt sales ,ticket sales and sponsership.(Herbalife for example)It is nice to see Becks standing up for himself, maybe now he will tell Posh that from now on he will be running his career, not her!

By Rita Cocking.. Posted July 26 2009 at 2:41 PM.

I laugh at you Brits.

If it wasn't for the US kicking the Nazis across North Africa, through Sicily, up the Italian mainland through Normandy and beyond the Germans could have concentrated their forces on the Eastern Front. By no means did the Soviets or the Americans win WWII alone. For you Brits who forget because you were to busy hunckered down on your island worried about your own survial, we Americans were also fighting a SECOND front in the Pacific with minimal help from anyone.

Nobody is asking you to bow to us, but realize that the UK was bailed out by US manpower and industry in WWI AND WWII. We helped save the world from the Nazis and keep the Soviets out of Western Europe for 50 plus years. Sometimes I think arragont Europeans need a REAL enemy like Hitler or Stalin to remind them what a real friend the United States is.

But I'm sure I'm wrong. (sarcastic) I'm sure you guys will argue Europe could have beat the Nazis without the USA. I'm sure you will argue Europe wouldn't have fallen to the Soviets without the USA.

The world is a better place because of America. God willing there won't be a reason in our lifetimes where we have to prove this again.

By Scott.. Posted July 26 2009 at 3:08 PM.

It's very amusing, and ironic, to read these comments from from the birthplace of hooliganism, lecturing Americans about fan behavior. And by the way, it will always be called "soccer" here because it is a 2nd tier novelty sport in this country. It is very tiresome to watch a bunch of European sissy-boys dancing around with each other and flopping/overreacting at the slightest bit of contact.....but a great cure for insomnia though ! lol !

By Anthony.. Posted July 26 2009 at 2:40 PM.

Plus I think the Beckhams have done more in helping charities than 98% of the "celebrities" in the business. Pretty generous people for all the accusations of greed and selfishness coming from both sides of The Pond.

By JPousson.. Posted July 26 2009 at 2:24 PM.

As an American soccer (football, okay) fan, I am ashamed at the ways the Galaxy fans acted towards Beckham. Beckers did us ALL A huge favor by coming to the US, and I understand absolutely his moving to AC Milan to get a better quality of play. You can see how he worked with Pato naturally, he was back in HIS game. L.A. should be PROUD to have this good guy on the pitch in their kit, and should understand that no thoroughbred would be satisfied kicking around the county fair instead of taking a few laps at Preakness.
David, sorry man. Those fans were jerks. I'll still be a Beckham fan. Tell you what: Rapids fans would be FAR more accepting, Denver is ab eautiful city, how about you, Vic and the boys sign up with us for half the year and Milan the other???
