Blues' £12million midfielder has been earmarked by boss Mark Hughes to lead his side into battle next season.
Current City skipper Richard Dunne is set go for £5m with Sunderland and Spurs leading the chase.
And Hughes is convinced the arrival of England star Barry, 28, from Aston Villa has provided him with some major options.
Sparky said: "Gareth is acknowledged as one of the best midfielders in the country but he is also a leader and a captain.
"To have players like Gareth, who understand when the momentum is changing in games and have the ability to dig in is an important strength.
"We have a captain at the moment but we want captains all over the field - and we will have more of them this year."

Garreth Barry accused of being disloyal by his fans?
That is quite unbelievable after 12 years service to one club.Maybe Villa shouldnt bother signing any new faces again and rely on there academy instead.
That way they will have loyal players, not the best there is just loyal!

Who's Hughes kidding. With the type of players that they've been linked with, Barry won't even get a game in the second half of the season. He's odds on to go to Sunderland on loan in January 2010 at the very latest. He should never have moved. He's just showed us what's wrong with football. The only loyalty is in the stands.

hope Dunne doesn't go....... fair enough he had quite a bad start to last season... but just look at his form in the last 5 years...... the defence falls apart without him.....
