The Scottish singer - whose performances in earlier rounds of the show clocked up millions of views on YouTube - wowed TV viewers with a heart-rending performance of I Dreamed A Dream.
But it was not enough to beat Diversity, who won on the night with a fantastic dance display.

The ten-member street dance troupe pulled off one of the biggest shocks in TV history.
After the incredible result was announced the group - aged between 12 and 25 - looked overwhelmed that they had beaten Susan and fellow street dancers Flawless to the £100,000 prize.
Diversity, all family and friends, amazed the audience and judges with a breathtaking 'Transformers Medley' - choreographed by super-talented leader, 20-year-old Ashley Banjo.
At one point a junior troupe member appeared as Superman, drawing gasps from the audience.

Turning themselves into a giant robot, they had judges and the audience on their feet cheering wildly as they moved in time with a series of dazzling leaps, somersaults and breakdance moves.
They will now appear in front of the Queen at the Royal Variety Performance later this year.
Susan chose the same song from Les Miserables as she sang during her original audition.
She wore a sparkling, floor-length gown and won a standing ovation from the studio audience.
Simon Cowell told her: "Win or lose, you had the guts to come back here tonight, face your critics and you beat them."
Boyle now stands to make an estimated £8million fortune from a glittering singing career, having been plucked from obscurity just a few weeks ago.
The other act to make the final three was Julian Smith.
Prior to the show going out, it was revealed Susan has already been approached to appear in an episode of the hit American TV series Ugly Betty - broadcast on Channel 4 in the UK.
An insider said: "She had a good laugh when she heard - she was the first one to spoke the joke.
"But of course she would love to do it after the final.
"It's a brilliant way of boosting her profile even further in America.
"It's a small walk-on role - and she will be playing herself.
"Susan joked: 'I might not be a stunner but I'm better looking than Betty!'"
On Saturday, Talent judge Piers Morgan had called on Boyle's critics to stop sniping.
Speaking on Sky News at lunchtime, Piers played down public fears about Boyle's well-being following reports that was feeling the pressure as the big night approached.
He said: "Susan Boyle is a very, very nice lady from Scotland who never thought she would have this chance."
Piers, who judges alongside Simon Cowell and Amanda Holden said it "angered" him that people were "trying to get inside her head" amid speculation over the effect that the stress of the competition is taking.
Boyle denied a foul-mouthed outburst while watching Britain's Got Talent on television at her hotel earlier this week, he said, and responded angrily to two journalists because she is "feisty".
"Susan is a feisty lady, she is not a little kitten, she is a very feisty lady from Scotland who has had a tough life and she wasn't going to take any nonsense and I applaud her for that."

Susan Boyle should have won the contest, hands down. Diversity was ok but nothing compared to Susan Boyle. This woman is special, her music will live forever. She must sing for the queen to fulfill her dream.

She was mediocre, Diversity was boring.
It's just like my father said (he was a WWII veteran who served with the RAF), "There is no better second-rater in the world than an Englishman."

Susan, your "Cry Me A River", from your 1999
charity CD was fantastic. Every bit a good as
Peggy Lee or other professional singers could
have done it. Don't let peoples negative comments get you down, you are fantastic!!!

Susan Boyle has a naturally good sounding voice. It has not been modified by so called experts, electronic equipment, or a desire on her part to be anything but naturaL sounding. This competition was a single persons skills like Susan's as compared to to the practiced performance of a number of people. I don't believe that this was a fair competition because of the differences in the types, or catagories of the performances being judged. I am not criticizing the winning groups performance, only that an eclipse of the sun and the birth of a child while both both spectacular, they are not in the same catagory and can not be judged the same way. Susan you are very good, don't let this be any kind of a setback for you!!!
By Russ.. Posted June 1 2009 at 6:09 AM.
You people are Ridiculous. Patting yourselves on the back because you're so enlightened for "seeing her inner beauty and talent."
All you're seeing is your own ego. For an amateur, Boyle is very good -- but on a stage of professionals, she is average at best. She merely has one song that she has (almost) mastered, and that's about it. You fail to notice that her 2nd performance was atrocious.
And for a singer to repeat their first song for the final performance suggests professional laziness or pathetic desperation. (it's not like they have to come up with an entire routine)
Personally I'm not even a fan of "Dance." But to call Diversity's act merely "Dance" is like calling the Space Shuttle an airplane. What they did was pure Performance Art; with each performance surpassing the one before.
Granted, most professional Broadway performers could have probably beaten Diveristy, but Susan Boyle (bless her heart) is Not at that level. Though with some proper training, she probably could be.
This ridiculous Realty TV Farce of the past month may have been great for your egos, but the hypocrisy has only displayed the worst of your souls.

Why must so many disregard those who look most like the rest of us. Susan has an inner beauty that shines as brightly as any flashbulb and it makes a beautiful sound.
By Will Campbell.. Posted June 1 2009 at 5:16 AM.
Diversity was a good dance troupe, but no better than hundreds of others. But Susan has a quality of voice that is unbelievably rare to find. She should have won, and even now will still have the better career and make a whole lot more money than Diversity ever thought of. Clearly, it was the incident that turned the English against Susan, but they need to get a grip on reality. Susan has had mild brain damage from birth, and shame on those slimeballs who tried to get inside her head just to disrupt the program. They are not human by any standards, and the English need to look at reality and not be influenced by demons. WAKE UP!

By AbuBaker.. Posted June 1 2009 at 4:34 AM.
I feel not only bad for Susan Boyle, but I also feel bad for the Queen. The Queen is a sedate woman of advanced years and surely she has no interest in watching gymnast/dancers that remind me of Michael Jackson's video dancers from years ago. How much nicer to have been able to listen to the truly talented singers who performed. Ms. Boyle and the little ten year old should also be allowed to perform for the Queen, don't you think? USA
By J. Smart.. Posted June 1 2009 at 4:19 AM.
Children who have been together for 1 year practicing actually more of an acrobatic routine than dancing. A feat that requires youth and practicee doesn't compare with 36 years of honing a singing voice. It should have been Susan 1st Julian 2nd and The dance troupe 3rd. Britain may have talent but they don't recognize ..ergo Susan not being discovered till now..She's # 1 with World though.
By Jackie.. Posted June 1 2009 at 4:15 AM.
You are better off not winning the talent contest.
Now you can get on with your singing career and make your CD that millions of us are waiting to buy.
May god bless and guide you in your future plans
ALL THE BEST susan.

Susan Boyle's is a heart warming story notwithstanding the media circus that both tried to help and to hurt her.
She is who she is and with talent on loan from God, her potential is enormous if she uses it for His Glory. Well done Susan.

"How many people listen to her kind of music anyway?"
"Les Miserables" itself has been seen by more than 50,000,000
peopleand earned $2,000,000,000--and that's the tip of the iceberg.
More people come to NYC--always on the short list of international destinations--for theater.
Broadway alone raked in nearly $2,000,000,000 last year.
On the other hand, Rap or hip hop or whatever you want to call it is dropping in popularity like a polished rock.
The winners were not dancers--at least not in any recognizeable classical way. Not ONE of them would get a second look at an audition for Chorus Line or the New York City Ballet. They were acrobats stringing together moved Janet Jackson ditched 10 years ago.
By JohnCarpenter.. Posted June 1 2009 at 2:48 AM.
really, i don't think she should have won. i mean seriously, how many people even listen to the type of music she does?
By tels.. Posted June 1 2009 at 1:44 AM.
Once again lesser talent and ability is shoehorned into the winner's circle in the name of diversity. I may vomit.
By TJ.. Posted June 1 2009 at 1:38 AM.
Even though Susan Boyle seems a little strange, she deserved to win. Diversity reminded me of everything we are so sick of hearing about in America. Britain has some phenomenal talent, but I do not understand why everyone who wins has to have dental work. Geez, I hope Obama's health plan includes dentists! In fairness, Simon's teeth are great!
By Elizabeth.. Posted June 1 2009 at 1:22 AM.
Susan Boyle CLEARLY should have won this competition and it's a tragedy that it didn't happen that way. Although it left a sour taste in everyone's mouth - everyone knows she clearly is the winner.
Susan keep up the great work to me you are the winner!
By Jeff Greenberg Rosenstein .. Posted June 1 2009 at 12:59 AM.
Susan really is the winner since I truly don't think she needed to win a talent contest when the world knows she was the most talented and should have won. I'll buy her CD as soon as its on the market.
To jeb32845: You are so right and what a shame that talent is less important in today's world.
By MSP.. Posted June 1 2009 at 12:21 AM.
Oh come on! She lost because of the following: she's middle aged, overweight, unattractive, and a little slow on the uptake. Never mind that she was the most talented, had she been a man she might have won. There was an American radio star, Kate Smith, that every one loved to listen to. However, when she made the transition to TV she bombed. She was very obese. Let's be honest, looks and personality are more important than talent in this world today.
By jeb32845.. Posted May 31 2009 at 11:05 PM.
I'm very interested in Susan Boyle, she is a fun character to keep up with. I love watching her videos on You Tube. I never enjoyed anyone singing more than her. I can't imagine anyone taking her place in my mind. She has made me laugh and cry more than any movie or anything or anyone in my whole life. I absolutely love Susan Boyle and I will always want to know what is going on with her and her life.

If I remember right, the "winner" is the one who gets the most fame and fortune in the end. Diversity will have fifteen minutes of fame and then fade into obscurity. How can they make any cash break-dancing? Come now.... Now Susan Boyle will sell a mega-platinum album, perform all over the world, and (if the nay-sayers will calm down), have a lasting career that will earn her millions. And the winner is...?
By Bob.. Posted May 31 2009 at 8:55 PM.

By Robert.. Posted May 31 2009 at 7:57 PM.
When I first heard Susan Boyle, tears came to my eyes.
She is the ONLY singer I have ever bookmarked.
She sings so lovely, and she is one of us!
Keep singing, save the media industry.
I have heard nothing so lovely. Gives one hope for the future.
More Susan Boyle! Please give the audience a chance!
By j constable.. Posted May 31 2009 at 8:07 PM.
She has by far the most earing potential...Who can listen to a dancing CD in a car?
Diversity will be known as the group that beat Susan Boyle and that will be there only claim to fame..
By gram.. Posted May 31 2009 at 8:01 PM.
Wow! The British have shown themselves to be idiots by voting the "mecha-dance" team the "Best of Britian". I've seen more talent at Six Flags during a fist fight between street gangs. This is what you think defines talent now? Oh Really?
Borrowing from the Kinks, there is no Britian anymore. You guys suck.

-LOL- its like having to judge which is better or more delectable: a bunch of grapes or an orange. How can Susan win? Perhaps if she had a back-up group doing back flips and pirouettes on their heads. Susan Boyle's voice will be heard for a much longer time than DIVERSITY shenanigans.
By lark.. Posted May 31 2009 at 6:05 PM.
I would rather listen to Susan sing. In American we are rapidly getting tired of the political issue Diversity brought to the stage, and it is the real reason Diversity won. I hope Susan's around for a long time.

I was going to vote for Susan but after watching Diversity perform my only choice was to vote for them. They were absolutely FANTASTIC and what an innovative routine! Susan has a wonderful future ahead of her and I look forward to her album. I wish Diversity and Susan all the succes in the world and the very best of luck to the other finalists.
By Judy.. Posted May 31 2009 at 3:17 PM.
It seems like honestly, every time someone quirky or different gets into the spotlight, the media does it's damned best to tear them apart the first chance they get. The attacks and criticism that Susan has endured has been the biggest display of middle school mentality I've ever witnessed. I've seen Photoshopped makeover pictures of her on TV tabloids! Why are we so obsessed with shoving her into the Hollywood mold?
Why can't you people be happy for her? If not for her singing voice, but for the fact that she went out there and did something special? She's done a far lot more than you've ever done.
By Holly.. Posted May 31 2009 at 3:24 PM.
Didn't matter if Boyle won or lost, she's already won.
As to those who think that she's done with the end of this show, don't understand the power of the wallet. Those who were touched by her will buy her CDs and put our money where our mouth is.
Btw, there are alot of folks on both sides of the pond who think that looks matter. There are also a great many of us who laugh at those who think that.
She's going to do far more than local bar karoake after this.
By JR.. Posted May 31 2009 at 3:12 PM.
Diversity won? Hmm.... After seeing the act in comparison to Ms. Boyle I can only think.... how PC. We welcome Britain to the postmodern era where reality has no substance, truth is irrelevant, actual skill and merit do not apply; where judgment is based on political correctness.
Diversity? I've seen better acts at amusement parks throughout the US.
I'm also curious having heard the stories about the betting going on and how the odds were for her to win and long against diversity. That sounds like an open opportunity for corruption in a phone in vote.
Point is - she was better than them - much better. Something does not ring to the truth here.
By Madmax.. Posted May 31 2009 at 3:07 PM.
this show has everyone in a trance. much of it is put on, the judges reactions, the contestants are "handled"
Susan Boyle is no great talent, her final performance bordered on pathetic.
She was surprisingly good in her audition, but beyond that, she is either an average singer, or below average.
By jay.. Posted May 31 2009 at 2:55 PM.
Diversity is an example of great brit talant? Then you brits have none. Come to the states and see the same thing, just as good, on a daily basis by various folks, performing in every subway station in New York City.

Wow, it's amazing to me all the negative comments about Susan on here. She has a terrific voice and has endured a somewhat tough life. I think everyone that has made a negative comment is jealous of her instant fame/popularity.
So congratulations to both Diversity with an awesome performance and to Susan Boyle for coming so far, best of luck to both of you!!!

At least the NEWSOFTHEWORLD! didn't offer a headline that said: "Susan Boyle-The End of The Dream", as so many other PopMedia publications did.
Susan Boyle achieved her dream, which to remind us all, was to become a professional singer. She will be a multi-million CD artist in short order, with appearances likely all over the world. The dance troupe Diversity, an interesting distraction {but a fine group of lads}, will be forgotten in weeks or months.
By bluecollarbytes.. Posted May 31 2009 at 1:23 PM.
Thank God this mess is over. I'm so sick of seeing that woman, much less hearing her. She sang two songs and people are acting like she's the end all be all. She bombed because she doesn't have a strong voice and has no charisma or class.
But don't you fret - you haven't seen the last of Susan Boyle - she'll be performing karaoke in the pub down the street!
She should go back to her tiny village in Scotland, play with her cat and sod off.
By Dr Johnny Skeptic.. Posted May 31 2009 at 1:19 PM.
Way to go Susan for extending your two fingers to the critics who tried to bring you down, if for no better reason then because they have no happiness in their own lives!

Susan didn't need to win she has a career already mapped out after her first performance - Diversity rocked, three original performances, perfect where Susan could only sing the same song. Diversity boys deserved to win they are an inspiration to the kids out there, they are not hanging around street corners or shopping centres, or involved in knife crime, they worked damm hard and the UK should be proud of them. Sod the states you guys are jaded against acts like this cos you have too much hip-hop culture, stick with American Idol!!

So Diversity sets a precident.
How about next time they get the complete cast from a Musical and let them compete. Or maybe a new 100 boy choir that needs a break, or maybe a contestants extended family doing backup vocals.
By electing these yutes BGT ruined the show for performers.
By Mr. Carter.. Posted May 31 2009 at 7:52 AM.
Listen up, meatheads. The right act won. Diversity was amazing. Susan Boyle is an awesome singer who understood her limitations? Did you listen to the words of her song from "Les Miserables", or were you too busy wanting to lift her up or tear her down? Watch the video again, listen to the words. She did not choose to sing that again by accident. She knew. She is a bigger person than most of you, and far more gracious. The right act won. Susan knows it and you should too.
By James.. Posted May 31 2009 at 8:13 AM.
The right act won. In fact, I don't think Susan's performance earned her a second place finish at all.
During her final - her timing was off - she rushed her notes - sang off key in a few places..... whereas there were other acts that were flawless (no offense to the group Flawless).
Even little Hollie has a better voice when she's not a bundle of nerves.
For those predicting a long career for Boyle.... nonsense.
Truly talented singers are able to get a new song learned and perfected in a week.
Diversity had three completely different acts learned and polished while Boyle was out getting a makeover.

Susan's voice will resonate into infinity. Once the dancers do their thing, It's over.
By Bob Kowalski.. Posted May 31 2009 at 6:29 AM.
"Diversity?" What a P.C. load of rubbish. It lacks imagination. If a group is diverse, people will know it. No need to broadcast it. HEY LOOK! WE HAVE ALL DIFFERENT PEOPLES IN OUR GROUP. Zzzzz.
Regarding this comment made above: "I'll bet the Queen is in a foul mood tonight!"
I don't think I've laughed so hard in days at something I've read online.
Susan seemed to be a bit ahead of the music in tonight's show, according to the YouTube bit. She is definitely prone to nerves.
Hard to believe that a bunch of hip-hop breakdancers beat out someone who sang like a lark, but I guess the young'uns vote and that's more apt to appeal to them. I'm sure Susan's new popularity and of course, her looks, were marked against her. Must not have a middle-aged woman succeed, particularly if she's not a Barbie. Must worship at the altar of youth.
I'd say the Yanks are different, but I'd be lying.

The world's citizens feel powerless in the face of politicos performing dutifully for a depraved puppeteer. So is it any wonder Susan so touched the hearts of millions? Here is a real, bonafied woman-next-door with an angelic voice and a beautifully humble spirit -- with a mite of micheviousness mixed in to make things interesting.
Susan, thank you for blessing the world with your timely, God-given gift. You give us hope -- real hope -- for a better tomorrow. Somewhere in heaven, your Mum is smiling.

By Dan.. Posted May 31 2009 at 4:54 AM.
The show is essentially a marketing tool for up and coming acts. Boyle doesn't need the exposure and has her recording contract so there is no need for her to win. This isn't cynicism, it's just the way these things work.

Susan got the money, she got the ring, she got everything- (paraphrasing a famous baseball speech)-
Why not let Diversity get a prize, too?
Seems to me that Susan ended up with more that the prize at stake.

While all you Brits are choked up about Susan Boyle, you seem to have forgotten that what brought her to stardom was not her voice--which was good, but not spectacular--, but the extremely low expectation from a homely 47 year-old virgin. What killed her chance to win the top prize, again, was not her voice--which was good but not spectacular--but the extremely high expectation coming out of the much hyped fame. Her voice simply could not meet that superficially high expectation in the final.
Britain may or may not have talent, but you surely are a land of expectations. What was the name of the novel that Chuck Dickens wrote? Great Expectations?

I'll bet the Queen is in a foul mood tonight!

Congratulations to Diversity. Susan, keep in mind that the runner-up quite frequently overshadows and experiences more success than the actual winner. Like Clay Aiken vs. Ruben who???? Looking forward to seeing and hearing more of Susan Boyle. She's the real deal!

The dancing will only last as long as their youth, and then fade, but a voice is a recording that can last a long time. A kids dance troupe is like a kids gymnastics team, talented yes, but short lived, they can only stay that age for a short time and fade away.

I ditto Janette, USA will trade Susan for Obama, please!!

Oh, my God. And ugly woman can sing in somewhat decent manner.
Susan Boyle is RIDICULOUSLY overrated, and it's pathetic that so many people have been taken in by this BS.
She needs to fade away in obscurity NOW, and be an answer to a Trivial Pursuit question in a decade's time.

Susan is clearly the winner...it would be a sad day in Great Britain is Susan does not sing for the Queen...she is singing for Scotland for sure...go girl...you are special!! God Bless!!

Susan Boyle has the kind of talent that will endur through the years. Susan you won maybe not BGT show but you are the winner and your voice will be heard for many years to come.
We love you.

The thing is, a dance group's act is done in no more than 15 minutes. They cannot put on a show for 1 and1/2 hours and even remain remotely interesting. These blokes will dive off into obscurity in a couple of weeks. Diversity - Talent? Yes. Boring? Definitely.

Ms. Boyle will have a six month stint in the limelight. After that she, like so many others, will fade into obscurity.
It's the fickle nature of the consumer that bred her rise and will most certainly contribute to her fall.

Susan may have lost the big finale, but she has already garnered hearts & fans across the globe. She has a career ahead of her. No one will know who Diversity is tomorrow.
We love you, Susan! You have the voice of Heaven itself!

If the Queen were smart she would invite Susan Boyle to sing for her. She could use the good will it would bring her.
After all the Queen's mother was a fiesty Scotswoman herself!

but I bet diversity doesn't have a contract offer

Love that song, Susan. Brings a tear to my eye again. You are the one with the most talent. The dancers do not hold a candle to you. Our Dancing with the Stars had vetter dancers in America. March on to your career. You have earned it.

"Boyle now stands to make an estimated £8million fortune from a glittering singing career, having been plucked from obscurity just a few weeks ago."
Now who's the real winner????
Diversity were great and I congratulate them. As another person noted in this post, Susan has won the heart of the world.
In America, we appreciate good talent when we see it.

What a laugh! "diversity" represents England? How sad to see you lose your culture.
By ricardo maxwell.. Posted May 31 2009 at 2:14 AM.
Julian Smith should have won. BGT has way too many dance acts...once you've seen them 2 or 3 times, then it becomes just a yawn! The music can go on and on. Julian & Susan have lasting talents, Diversity is awesome, but with no staying power. Even Hollie Steel will be a force to be reckoned with when she grows up a little more.

Diversity..ok...now they can break up and go back to being stupid.,,,Susan is Smashing!
