Amanda Ryan got boob job on the NHS at just 17

NHS gave me a boob job at 17

Shock as teenager gets free implants to improve temper

A GIRL of 17 was given a £4,000 boob job on the NHS - because she was jealous of school pals' bigger busts.

Amanda Ryan was just 16 when she decided she fancied the op, even though her body was not fully developed.

Amanda Ryan: my NHS boob job hell at 17

Girls under 18 are almost always turned down, but after hearing how the stress of being flat-chested was making Amanda grumpy a counsellor at her health centre put her forward.

Now she wishes it had NEVER been done as she has been plagued by problems ever since.

She told News of the World: "It is worryingly easy to get a free boob job at an age when you might not be ready for it.

"If I could advise anyone, I would tell them to wait until they are at least 18. You aren't ready for it at such a young age."

Campaign group TaxPayers' Alliance hit out at the decision. Spokeswoman Susie Squire said: "The NHS is struggling to provide basic and life-saving surgery.

"Cancer drugs should always come above boob jobs. Some serious questions need to be asked about the spending priorities of this NHS trust." Amanda - a petite size 8 - went to her GP 16 months ago because she was feeling moody and losing her temper with her family.

She said: "I was a bit down and getting annoyed all the time. I was referred to a counsellor at my GP's surgery and went once a month for four months.

"I wanted to be one of the girls with big boobs. I felt everyone was laughing at me behind my back for having a smaller chest.

"I would stuff my bra and even spent £100 on breast enhancer medication which did not work.

Pain

"But I was amazed when the counsellor said I could have a boob job-all I needed was a signature from my mum.

"My mum wasn't happy about me being so young but knew I would probably have it done privately when I turned 18 anyway."

Amanda's boyfriend Brad Fothergill, 23, reassured her she looked fine the way she was. But she still got her boobs boosted from 32A to 32C last April, at Beardwood Hospital, Blackburn, Lancs. Amanda, of Preston, said: "At first I was delighted with the results. But since then I've had one problem after another. Now I'm looking at private treatment.

"Transform clinic in Manchester thinks one implant is capsulating-which means it is going hard and misshapen-but the NHS doctor doesn't think it is.

"There is definitely something wrong. It isn't meant to be painful." Transform Medical Group, Britain's biggest cosmetic surgery firm, said it would never perform a boob job on a girl under 18.

Clinical director Lorraine Ishak said: "A lot of teenage girls are skinny, their bodies are not fully formed and they have the idea that having larger breasts can make them happier. Their expectations of surgery are all wrong."

NHS North Lancashire's chief executive Ian Cumming said: "In certain very extenuating circumstances we fund treatments, such as breast augmentation, not normally available on the NHS.

"To protect confidentiality we are unable to comment further."

The Department of Health said: "The NHS doesn't carry out surgery for cosmetic reasons but to secure physical or mental health.

"We expect care to be offered on the basis of individual clinical need determined by clinicians."

Bizarre decision

By Dr Hilary Jones

WHY was this op done at such a young age? And why did the NHS trust fund it when others would baulk at such expenditure on non-essential, even frivolous surgery, given waiting lists for heart and cancer treatments?

Amanda would have had to convince a psychologist she was suffering significant mental anguish-feeling anxious, depressed or even suicidal as a result of her self-consciousness about her small breasts.

A psychologist should not consider normal teenage concern in that way. And I am puzzled at why the surgeon accepted the referral.

Here's a lesson for other girls thinking of such operations- they may not actually solve all your perceived problems and can make them worse.

i dont think there is anything wrong at all with what this girl did appart from her reasons if you feel ready to have a boob job at 17,18 or older then it should be allowed i mean i have 36f size boobs and i am terribly unhappy and i hate it. not the size the fact of how they sit with out a bra. im really unhappy and am going to my gp very soon, i will not let anybody see them not even my family i am embarressed, ashamed and seriously consious to the point of bursting into tears and the thought of it , and not being able to wear bras or suchlike . people should remember its personal opinions on your bodies that count, how you feel not how others feel.

i think its stupid how some ppl can call others 4 wanting a boob job and b in able to get them off the nhs i no how horrible it is to be unhappy with your chest so if ppl r feeling lyk this they should be able to have it done!

By lou.. Posted September 1 2009 at 6:13 PM.

HOW DID SHE DO IT,, I REALLY WANT A BOOB JOB, IVE GOT LOW SELF A STEAM,, IT WILL MAKE ME HAPPY,,, HOW DID SHE GET THE NHS TO DO IT..

By JANNINE JONES.. Posted July 24 2009 at 3:37 PM.

OMG! Dont be so hard on her, im a 32a and WILL be seeing my docter about one too. And btw, if she was so down about her boobs that could leed to depression, which is very serious medical problem aswell and some girls get it to prevent that as depression can lead to suicidal thoughts. so dont go giving her the guilt trip! this oviously was helping her mentally!

By Laura.. Posted July 24 2009 at 10:14 AM.

i dont c the problem of having a boob job on the nhs people who got big boobs wouldnt under stand no 1 is happy with their bodies if u had the chance u would change it,so why critisise peole that what to change their bodies im 24 and a 34a in fact i cant even find a desent bra to fit me and if i do it costs me a bomb,i will be seeing my doctor to try and get 1 on the nhs.if their was another way i would do it

By sam.. Posted July 11 2009 at 8:07 AM.

I Understand Why She Wanted The Boob Job As Im Currently Seeing My Doctor About It. It Can Completely Take Over Your Life And Can Be Really Depressing. Its Uncontrolable. Im 20 Though And This Op Should NeVER Have Been Done On Someone So Young. I Cant Beleive Now She Regrets It She Doesnt Know How Lucky She Is To Have Had It Done. Theres People Out There On The Verge Of Suicide Due To The Way They Feel !

I think this is disgusting! People are dying everyday because of Cancer but instead we are giving away free boob jobs to girls who are 'stressed'. Stress should be managable for a teenage girl, every teenager i know is conscious of their body but i don't know one person who has scammed a free boob job off the NHS. I think its a disgrace and she should be ashamed.

By Ashleigh.. Posted May 22 2009 at 11:46 AM.

i think this is so funny, in some of the other stories she wrote saying she was bullied in high school hahaa no she wasnt and she dint always cover up at all i went to school with her in most of her lessons (well when she came into school that is) , shes being all grumpy and stuff so she gets a new pair of boobs jeeees im depressed can i have a new nose please? she was a normal teenagers yeah bit on the quiet side bad tempered but not so depressed i want to pay for her boob job to cheer her up! glad it went wrong serves her right for spending our well earnt cash! x

By blkmagic.. Posted May 14 2009 at 12:05 AM.

hi im 19 years of age! i had 34a breasts, fell pregnant and at end of pregnancy my boobs went up2 size 36d.. my child is now 8months old..recently i have lost alot of weight down to 8 stone..and my boobs are back down to a 34a. they are very droopy and covered in stretch marks, i wouldnt even call them boobs. its really just 2 heeps of loose wrinkly skin..

im so self-consious about them and cant wear tight fitted tops! im considering seing my doctor about a boob job on the nhs as i cant afford to pay for one! my boobs really are a big issue and really depress me as well as the fact iv lost so much weight! does anyone think this is wrong?????

By missy a.. Posted May 7 2009 at 3:36 PM.

£4000 "rare" operation by tax payers and the ungrateful girl (put it nicely) sells her story to the press to gain fame, some spare change and to shame the NHS...

By Dan.. Posted May 1 2009 at 2:41 PM.

How selfish people are dying of cancer because their local NHS clinics are refusing them the expensive drugs and she gets a boob job when she probably would have grown them later anyway!
Whoever gave the go ahead should be sued through public litigation

By zara.. Posted May 1 2009 at 2:39 AM.

British women have no breasts, but are compensated by very long, horselike teeth. There is nothing new in this, please, accept yourself as you are, don't experiment with your body, possibly damaging it.

By Howard Calarini.. Posted April 30 2009 at 5:43 AM.

I think it is absolutley discusting! I am about to start fertility treatment as i have pcos and cant concieve naturally but because my husband has 2 children from a previous relationship i have got to pay a large amount of money for the treatment but they hand out boob jobs for free! The NHS is a bloody JOKE!

By Amy Edge.. Posted April 28 2009 at 9:56 PM.

I really don't agree with her getting a breast operation at this age, particularly as it seemed "she just wanted to fit in".
I'm 18 and have in the last year lost 8 stone in weight. I have never had "proper" shaped boobs, but they are emphasized now I've lost weight. Me and my mum went to the docs and I explained my situation and the doctor has been of amazing support, writing a letter with me to a cosmetic surgeon on my first appointment about this matter.
Therefore, it shouldnt be generalised as tax payers scroungers to "fit in" but also consider the ones who have real issues with body image and their confidence at a point where your almost suicidal over my confidence issues.
But in terms of this story - the money really should have been used on better things, even she admitted it!

By Ellie.. Posted April 27 2009 at 5:25 PM.

I had wanted a nose job since I can rememeber, I was constantly in counselling, at my doctors seeing psycotherapists etc...My doctor eventually referred me to a specilaist on the NHS which took about 3yrs + and can you believe it my case was rejected. For neary 30 yrs I sufffered mentally and physically but yet this girl gets a little grumpy and she gets a boob job...get a grip!!! I eventually went private and paid £4k 2 yrs ago, best money I ever spent. I feel more confident and happier...shame the NHS could'nt help yet I've always worked paying my taxes and NI....

By Ams.. Posted April 27 2009 at 12:53 PM.

Shocking. I waited 9yrs & had to SAVE UP every last penny of the £5295 for mine. Very, very happy thank you. Especially as I have a clear conscience - they're all mine, and they didn't come from funds meant for life-saving operations, treatments or research. SHOCKING!!!

By Perky Boobies .. Posted April 27 2009 at 12:45 PM.

One word = Shallow!
My friends had boobs and I didn't so I stamped my feet till I got what I wanted. - said in a baby type voice!
I have loads of things I don't like about me but I don't do anything about it as I am in good health and those thing I don't like make me, me!

By Uncle Mart.. Posted April 27 2009 at 1:00 PM.

How ungrateful can someone that is still a child be. Im 30 & have recently had an appointment at Glos Breast clinic where I was told that the Primary Care Trust wouldnt consider funding a boob job for myself. My breasts are 34aa Ive got 1 child & have been single since Ive had her, as I have no confidence when I go out, to meet people & dont want to get close to a man as I feel my breasts are inadequate for a women of my age. I dont understand the fairness in the system.........argh

A 16-year-old dating a 23-year-old. Yup, yup, I don't see anything wrong with this picture. It's UK after all where you experience your first sexual encounter before you are conceived.

Britain, you really let yourself go.

By hilox.. Posted April 27 2009 at 6:20 AM.

As an expat living in the US, I wonder if this is why Obama wants to nationalize our health care. If so, I don't want any part of it. My boobs are just fine, thank you.

By Katee.. Posted April 27 2009 at 4:58 AM.

I had ears that stuck out and i know how it feels to get very down about your look but at the age of 21 i saved my money and paid £1500.00 (in 1991) and paid for my own operation as i thought that burns victims and people who were far worse off than me should be looked after by the NHS...Shame on her!!!

By G Malkin.. Posted April 26 2009 at 10:55 PM.

YOU KNOW WHEN I READ THISS
A 17-year-old girl, who could not take the pressure of having small breasts, has got a 4,000-pound boob job done on the NHS.
I CRIED IM ON ANTIDEPRESSENTS SINCE 15YRS OLD LOFREPRAMINE AND QUIENTERIPINE BECOUSE I HATED MY BOOBS doctors told me counciling and every yr put tablets up im now taking 300mg quinterapine and 210 lofrepramine

i think its very unfair how a girl of 17 gets it just like that and im just stuffed with pills im 31 nearly, and yes constantly worried about my 34aa boobs !!!!

By cheri.. Posted April 26 2009 at 11:39 PM.

Why does the people we pay to run services such as health service , police etc hide behind the "we cannot comment on individual cases " crap. If an individual wants to discuss their case in public then there is no excuse for officials to sya that there is a reason not t discuss their individual case!

By george.. Posted April 26 2009 at 9:11 PM.

Just read through the comments and cannot agree more with what the majority have said. There are many people in this country who need life saving treatment that they have to beg for. As a parent myself i would have told her if she was so unhappy then save up for it and wait. Why can't people these days just be grateful that they are healthy, there are many who do not have this choice.

By Nicky.. Posted April 26 2009 at 7:58 PM.

She is very stupid to turn around and complain about the NHS allowing her to get the boob job she WANTED at the time. Hypocrite is one word that comes to mind

By Bob Rosefield.. Posted April 26 2009 at 7:42 PM.

its hurtful seeing some silly girl getting a boob enlargment on the NHS when i myself am 17 and have a 32F bust. i feel so insecure every since i was 13 ive had a big bust, but everytime ive been to the doctors ive been told to go private when im old enough, its disgusting.

I am disgusted at reading this! I have suffered from big boobs since I had my last child 20 odd years ago I am now a 42H , my spine is curving in the opposite direction at the bottom through the weight, I have been told to lose more than 3 stone before they will consider me for surgery, which is easier said than done. I reckon if I had the op first, then I could excercise more easily, than trying to now.I would appreciate any help or info from anyone!!

By liz.. Posted April 26 2009 at 3:46 PM.

its riddiculous i had a friend who had very large ears and he was very deppressed and picked all through school and he saved and got his ears pinned back and this brat and others like her got the tax payers to pay for her new boobs, also i was told beacause i need braces and im over 18 i cant get them unless i pay and its very costly and she gets free boobs??

By MoiX.. Posted April 26 2009 at 3:27 PM.

I think she is well within her rights to have the boob job on the NHS, anything to stop you looking at her face is well worth the British public's pennies.

By Sian.. Posted April 26 2009 at 12:52 PM.

I was always one of those girls who desperately wanted big breasts as I was a 34B for most of my teens, but then when I was 20, my breasts suddenly had a major growth spurt and my bra size increased to a 38E - that was without any medication or surgery and took everyone by surprise as none of the other women in my family apart from my beloved Nanna had a large chest.
It's a nightmare though - although it can look brilliant in some dresses, it just attracts the wrong sort of attention, causes problems when buying clothes, makes me look matronly and larger in overall size to what I actually am, makes it difficult to cuddle the children and pets in my family and also sometimes causes excruciating back pain and it also costs me a fortune in bras!!!
What I'm trying to say is most of us feel dissatisfied when we get body changes we wished for because we don't think of the negatives - I also seriously considered breast implants when I was a teenager and I now thank God I didn't - no-one can really predict what changes your body will go through in your teens and early adulthood.

I'm 39 year old & had breast cancer 4 years ago, I had a full mastectomy & reconstuction after, I am still struggle with my confidence as I am not right with my appearance, I have been waiting a year to see if I can have another operation to rectify things.
I feel hurt when I hear things like this when I am still going through hell,

By lisa.. Posted April 26 2009 at 11:59 AM.

This is needs to GROW up and get real, whats goin to happen when she gets a job, she goin to go to the NHS to get a life time sick note. Wonder if i went to my gp and said i was grumpy i might get a tummy tuck( i've had 3 kids by c-section) lol..
What get's me is my cousin is 37 and she had to beg the NHS for a cancer saving drug (hercpin) only after 3 appels they said yes, well thanxs to the delay she is now taking drugs to prolong her life, lets hope by the time her children are older they don't have to beg the NHS for life saving drugs..

By jane howe.. Posted April 26 2009 at 12:06 PM.

By lisa.. Posted April 26 2009 at 12:01 PM.

Why does no one in our society accept any responsibility any more? It's not the NHS's fault, it's the stupid girl and her family that APPROACHED the NHS to have it done! Get a grip and stop looking for someone else to blame!

By Sonia.. Posted April 26 2009 at 12:13 PM.

This is a child- moaning about others looking better than her and wanted to be the one with big boobs.
As a parent of this child- and the medical centre she first went to- isn't/wasn't it you job to tell her like every other parent/counsellor to wait and let nature take its course. Whilst not right theres always someone called 'ironing board' in school as well as J'ordon' it works boths ways.

Ironically she now says she wishes she had waited. i thought you could not as you went every where in 10 layers. Obviously just another spoilt teen- whose parents need to reign in and the health centre&nhs needed to(not) have joined in as she obviously just played the system and lost by the sounds of it. Well done all- but with tax payers money- unacceptable.

By yabby.. Posted April 26 2009 at 11:28 AM.

What the Lord has forgotten, you make up with cotton (wool) as my mum always said. I had no boobs until I was about 16, girls at school used to ask me why I wore a bra when I had nothing there. When I started getting boobs boy, did I get a pair. Why didn't this girl wait until she was 21 and fully developed. It was way too young and now look whats happened. She said not having boobs made her moody and upset - how many parents are nodding and saying all teenagers are moody and get upset at the slightest problems. We have all had Kevins!!!!!!! and thankfully they grow out of it. Serves the girl right and hopefully it will put other girls off having this operation and say the NHS some money towards more needier operations and medicines!!!!!!!!!

By Karen 51.. Posted April 26 2009 at 11:54 AM.

thats shocking...and theres not even that much difference !

By stace.. Posted April 26 2009 at 11:48 AM.

By Angela.. Posted April 26 2009 at 10:48 AM.

If she feels that she didn't get a proper boob job via the NHS and that the aftercare offered was not up to scratch then maybe she should have got a job saved up and paid privately!!! I dont think she has the right to moan she is lucky to have had the operation for free - silly CHILD because thats what she still is.

By sinead.. Posted April 26 2009 at 10:57 AM.

who i am i to judge i just hope they have a engouth money if i have a heart attack or any thing else who is to blame 4 this ? the NHS or girl or the people who lathing at her

By ncj.. Posted April 26 2009 at 10:14 AM.

Wlhy not give muggers tax payers money, or bugulars free electrical goods. I know growth does not stop until 21 and i am no cosmetic/medical expertor gp. Confidence, self esteem classes, behaviour /anger management sounds like what was needed. Same for the people who prescribed it.

If at 21 years consider it, then probably say no-save for it, as women/men too refused time and time again life saving (cancer and other) drugs.

By millie.. Posted April 26 2009 at 10:23 AM.

Just watched the video clip- very angry. this girl angry because her friends have boobs and wear low tops, so what. She obviously needed to mature. Deal with it until you develop like the rest of the world. Ones gone hard. Not suprised- a know 'side effect. In the before picture you have a bust - which looks size of most teens. Is this a joke, teens can't wait to develop so give them implants! With my hard earn cash-thanks.

By millie.. Posted April 26 2009 at 10:31 AM.

Its beggars belief. They are supposed to check that you are mentally well before doing such ops. She said she was being bullied - werent we all, I got called flat paps the lot at school. Under the age of 18 is terrible & im sure alot of people will agree that the NHS have more important ops to do at there or our expense. It absoulutly disgustes me!!!!

By Gail.. Posted April 26 2009 at 9:42 AM.

A girl getting unnecessary surgery because she's "angry" one minute, nurses having to pay to work the next.

Only in a labout government!

By Mark.. Posted April 26 2009 at 9:42 AM.

Disgraceful! If anyone wants cosmetic surgery for anything other than a disfigurement, they should get a job and save for it, like I have to save for anything I want. But then, thats not the normal way of doing things anymore, is it !!!!

By Kelly.. Posted April 26 2009 at 9:19 AM.

I had a "boob job" on the NHS when I was 23, i was flat chested and had problems with my periods and womb which slowed down the development of my breasts. I approached my gp who referred me to the surgeon who decided i was eligable and within less than a year i had the op done. I am extreemly greatful for this and I appreciate the NHS is strained and had i needed to have paid i would have saved and done so. I have had people tell me its disgusting that i had a free boob job, while i see their point i see my personal circumstances and most women in my position would have done the same. I dont regret having the op, i waited until a good age and it gave me the confidence i needed.

By k.. Posted April 26 2009 at 8:59 AM.

Dr Hilary Jones is being a hypocrite. He may speak out about this one incident, however, he frequently speaks on GMTV about breast operations as though they are the most natural thing a woman could do. When are women ever going to learn that putting something like silicone in your body is completely unnatural. Doctors will not know the long term effects of silicone in the body until it is too late. Be happy with what you naturally have, stop believing that big breasts are the key to happiness in life. Implants can cause pain, discomfort, lethargy and constantly have to be replaced. Whoever carried out the operation on this young girl should be struck off for complete stupidity.

By Misty More.. Posted April 26 2009 at 8:57 AM.

this is not a treatment and wastes money for people who are sick!. She should pay for her own plastic improvements.

By steve tea.. Posted April 26 2009 at 8:44 AM.

I shouted at the neighbours cat this morning and got depressed when my toast burnt - I think a face-lift,boob job and tummy tuck on the NHS is what I need.....

By Lilly.. Posted April 26 2009 at 8:39 AM.

This is a disgrace. The girl should put her money where her mouth is and go private to have the implants removed. She sounds a right little madam who is determined to get her own way whatever the cost.
The taxpayer is sick and tired of people like this getting expensive treatment for what is merely a whim.
Lighten up Britain!

By Carol.. Posted April 26 2009 at 8:25 AM.

My relative has to pay someone to feed, wash, dress, change her incontinence pads, mobilise and keep her safe from harm because she has dementia - the NHS wont pay for this because she is not deemed 'ill' enough to be eligible for 'free' care. I wonder what she would be entitled to if she suddenly appeared in this country without a passport/was a stroppy teenager/got herself pregnant with no means of support or housing/committed a crime etc etc.

By Karen.. Posted April 26 2009 at 8:23 AM.

what a pathetic creature

By Pete.. Posted April 26 2009 at 7:15 AM.

Firstly to the NHS this is ridiculous, aren't there better things to spend public funds on? The parents of this child are terrible parents, allowing her to date a 21 year old when she should be concentrating on her school work so she can become a useful member of society and contribute. Hey but no she will joins the ranks of many teenage single mothers and benefit from the fantastic welfare state - the one that refuses to help those who are trying but makes itself availabe 24/7 for those who don't want to try. Why has this coutry gone to the dogs? PS - if she states at that at 18 she could get it done privately, shouldn't this have been means tested?

By Katie.. Posted April 26 2009 at 7:11 AM.

This is utterly ridiculous, we are now living in a country where so many are supported by so few!!! How can public funds be wasted on a boob job.. this should only be made available for those whose boobs cause back problems and those who have had to have surgery because of the likes of breast cancer. The NHS system is struggling to cope and yet here is money being wasted. This country really needs a reality check of the welfare and benefit system, this country has FINISHED!!!

By Jayne.. Posted April 26 2009 at 7:06 AM.

Hold your fire, its only the ONE NHS Trust involved, not ALL of them are following this policy, the article makes that plain enough. What's more it was just ONE teenager, not thousands.

The real story here is that at 15 she had a 21 year old boyfriend, what's more she states that "I would probably have it done privately when I turned 18 anyway." So she gets her wish, now she wants some compensation it seems. The girl can't make her mind up!

Then there's the fact that she passed through various Counsellors, Doctors etc and none of them thought it worth mentioning to the 'Tax Payers Alliance' that she was underage, perhaps they should consider talking to their patients more instead of just collecting their hefty monthly cheques or perhaps they thought a clinical decision wouldn't fall into the Tax Payers Alliances Remit

The final question is: Who are the Taxpayers Alliance, are they a Political group?

By Dave.. Posted April 26 2009 at 6:52 AM.

I can't believe this, this should not have been done and she will no doubt have problems for a long time to come, esp if the NHS don't seem to want to help now

LOL this is so the UK....congratulations...instead of giving people with proper problems grief counselling, suicide prevention, support against domestic violence and many other things we'll give it to a pathetic 16 year old who had a strop over the size of her bust.......

Am guessing she'll end up in Nuts or Big Brother too.....

Aim high and shoot for the gutter.....just like everyone else these days....

This is bloody pathetic. All because she was grumpy !?!?
now i wonder what i can get free if i throw a few wobblers...
Seems kids have got to be horrors there days to get anything, so i'll get my kids to stop going to school, tell them to let their good grades go to pot and throw hissy fots when ever they please, after all, they'll be better thought of then and get all kinds of free crap !!!

No wonder Britains gone to the bloody dogs.........totally disgusted

And you wonder why the NHS has such long waiting lists for things when Teenagers are given needless operations. What next sex change operations on babies born in the wrong sex, because the parents wanted a boy.
