He and wife Coleen got their £27.80 food bill slashed to just £13.90.
A source told the News of the World: "Everybody loves a special offer. Wayne and Coleen are no different.
"They come from working class roots and if they had the voucher then why not use it?
"Wayne's boss at Manchester United Alex Ferguson told his players they shouldn't be flash with their cash during the credit crunch and Wayne has obviously taken his words to heart.
"They could have afforded this meal millions of times over but they try to save the cash where they can."
Wayne, 23, took Coleen to the Gusto restaurant in Alderley Edge, Cheshire, not far from their home last week.
Our source added: "They are regulars there. It's very near their home and they often go there for dinner. Gusto had a promotion for half-price food.
"They came into the restaurant with one of the vouchers and when Wayne came to pay he handed it over. The waitress thought it was really sweet. They may be mega rich but it shows that, in many ways, they are just a normal down-to-earth couple."
For their discount meal Wayne ate a £5.95 chicken starter followed by a £8.95 spaghetti bolognese. Health conscious Coleen, who is on a fitness drive after putting on half a stone since her wedding to Wayne last year, ate soup at £3.95 followed by a low fat grilled chicken salad costing £8.95.
The half-price offer covered food only, so the couple received no discount on their £2.55 drinks bills for an orange juice and a bottle of still water.
Wayne did however leave a very generous tip of £5-around 30 per cent of the total bill.

Despite their £35million fortune, Coleen has always claimed the couple will never forget their roots in Croxteth, one of the toughest areas of Liverpool.
And although they now share a £3million mansion in Cheshire it is clear the couple still love a bargain.
The star pockets £90,000 a week from Manchester United plus £1.5million a year from image rights. He also banks £1million a year from Nike and almost £250,000 a year from computer games giant EA. Wayne has also made £3.5million so far from a 12-year, five-book deal.
His 22-year-old missus isn't short of a few bob either.
Coleen rakes in £560,000 a year for two magazine columns plus £130,000 for each ten-episode run of her ITV2 show Coleen's Real Women.
She has also earned £283,334 for an eight-book deal.
Our source says: "This actually proves Coleen is true to her roots. She may have the money to buy lavish clothes and eat at fancy restaurants but at heart she and Wayne are just a young couple from Liverpool and want to grab a bargain just like everybody else."
Recently Coleen said: "We're lucky to live in a nice house and to be able to afford nice holidays, but our day-to-day life is still just very normal.
"On a typical day we'll get up, Wayne will go to training and I'll do whatever work I've got to do, or visit my mum and dad.
"Then we'll come home, have our dinner together, watch TV and go to bed. Pretty boring really."
Gusto might well get another visit from the Rooneys on Valentine's Day.
Coleen has said: "Usually we go for a meal, just somewhere local."
Looks like the couple will have to dig a little deeper the next time they pop into their favourite restaurant, though-the half-price offer has ended.

Why does everyone have a downer on these two? Take a look at your own lives before you slag off other people!

If the were thinking about the credit crunch then they should have paid the whole bill. Use a bit of their wealth (allbeit only 13 more) to help out businesses that might need the cash

Recently Coleen said: Were lucky to live in a nice house and to be able to afford nice holidays, but our day-to-day life is still just very normal.
ROFLMHO ...
Normal as in you clean the house? Do the gardening? Go to work for minimum wage? Go shopping for items other than designer clothes and bags etc?
AS I SAID EARLIER ... SO FAR UP THEIR OWN ***** THEY CAN'T SEE HOW UN NORMAL THEY ARE.
Remember who pays your wages Wayne & Waynetta ?... that's right ... normal people who do all the above normal things!
By JuJu.. Posted February 9 2009 at 11:10 AM.
If Wayne had left a big tip he would have been called flash - a small one and he's mean. Put your green eyes away and let Wayne and his good lady get on with their lives!
By Paul.. Posted February 8 2009 at 7:38 PM.
It doesn't 'prove' anything at all! Only that they had a voucher, and used it.
'normal' would not be having a second Bentley because she wanted a different colour.
It would not be spending money like water on pointless bags at £hundreds a time.
It would not be squandering thousands each on bling watches, - they tell the time just the same.
The trouble with this amount of money so freely available to a young couple with not much idea, is that they DO lose touch with reality, that is not 'normal' or 'grounded'.

footballers are normal people. i don't have much money but don't moan about ones that do.
if i had 30 million or 30 quid i'd still hand in a half price voucher for my meal
would just be a dumb move otherwise

£5 tip generous? He makes more than that everytime he swears at a ref, loud mouth YOB!!
By Philly The Yid.. Posted February 8 2009 at 3:03 PM.
Normal people? Who are you all kidding?
He saves 15 quid on a meal and that makes him normal? Forget the hundreds of thousands on a wedding which was eventually paid for by a magazine.
This is embarrassingly tight. If he wants to be normal play for United for a lot less than you earn and have the club drop ticket prices so normal people can go.
rooney and his tramp of a wife are anything but normal

GOOD FOR HIM. MONEY HAS NOT GONE TO HIS HEAD.
By David .. Posted February 8 2009 at 12:36 PM.
Well done Mallie. But I think it might be better to give it to Rooney. He looks as if he could do with a good meal!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
By dave michaels.. Posted February 8 2009 at 11:35 AM.
16% is still pretty good, and Juju, why should they give the waitresses the money they save, they recieved the same food as everyone else and so paid same doesn't matter if they were on £12,000 a year, or £12,000 a day, the price is price.
By steven.. Posted February 8 2009 at 11:16 AM.
Any tip left should relate to the service received but of course to make things easier, people usually think of leaving a percentage or rounding up the bill.
If applying a percentage, it should have applied to the full amount rather than the sum paid after applying the voucher.
On that basis they left 16% not the "generous" 30%.

Normal people? Yeh i spose he jumped in his ford escort and drove home to his 2 bedroom house
By matty.. Posted February 8 2009 at 10:07 AM.
I admire the couple very much. They kept their life style simple and easy.
By Malta.. Posted February 8 2009 at 9:11 AM.
if it was my restaurant,it would say...wayne rooney and celebrities dine here....not embarass him and make him not come again. id let him have cheap meals and id give the whole team discount to have regulars, who would add more fame to my restaurant.then the prices would creep up a bit.
By roland gould.. Posted February 8 2009 at 8:50 AM.
ahhhh sweet :)
they are a credit to everyone!! roooooonnaaaaayyyyyyy go on lad
By superteebs.. Posted February 8 2009 at 7:56 AM.
APPALLING ...
When restaurants do deals like this it costs them a lot of money but will hopefully encourage customers to dine in their restaurant again.
Wayne and Waynette are mean using the voucher, and to only leave a £5 tip is even meaner.
Live in the real world ???
Don't think so!
They are both so far up their own ***** it's become boring now.
By JuJu.. Posted February 8 2009 at 7:13 AM.
I WOULD HAVE EXPECTED THEM TO HAVE GIVEN THE WAITRESSES THE REST OF THE MONEY AS A TIP INSTEAD OF A £5.
By Dee.. Posted February 8 2009 at 6:45 AM.
you can take the boy out of Liverpool but you can't take the liverpool out of the boy.....
Good to see he still lives in the real world....
By Woody.. Posted February 8 2009 at 5:23 AM.

I think that is amazingly good discipline and common sense.. Well done wayne for still understanding the value of money, which means more to spend for yourself and good causes
By Paul.. Posted February 8 2009 at 3:29 AM.

By Mallie.. Posted February 8 2009 at 12:39 AM.
