In her first job since quitting the Channel 4 show last year, the numbers whizz will visit schools up and down the country to see how the subject is taught. She will then tour schools abroad from the US to India to see what lessons can be learned.
Carol, 48, will chair a Maths Taskforce for six months and report to Tory leader David Cameron. Speaking ahead of the launch tomorrow, Carol told the News of the World: "Maths is critically important to the future of this country but Britain is falling behind the best performing countries.
"As a single parent of two children this concerns me greatly. In the last decade, 3.5 million children have left school without a basic qualification in Maths, a shocking statistic."
Carol hopes to "break the cycle of fear of maths" among secondary school children.
In the past the star has contributed to a government Maths review.
Now she insists she has no plans to become a Tory MP. And the work is unpaid.

My god what is everyone's problem, she is trying to help children...our future....what is wrong with that, should we all give up because we don't have specific credentials? If that is the case why should anybody bother helping anyone! She obviously has some mathematical talent (I would like to see the negative respondants attempt to calculate every numbers game within 30 seconds) so I'm all for her trying to put it to good use. As for loyalty to channel four and countdown, I take it (john 01/02) that you have worked for the same company doing the same job for over 20 years without expecting a pay rise or promotion? And if they decided to reduce your pay by 90% would you accept it? I think not! If you are in the public eye it is normal to be highly paid, security being the first of many reasons. As for the big for her boots comment...from what I have seen Carol started out as a shy retiring young women and her confidence came with age and maturity, as it should. If politics are a motivating factor then we should leave it up to the individual to deduce this and make up their own mind, if its beneficial to our country in the mean time what is the harm. I think society should stop patronising and scrutinising people just because they are in the public eye...try putting yourself under the microscope and see what results you get.

Couldn't agree more! Shame about the 'what's his name' link!
But, I agree that there are more serious issues involved. And see no reason why Carol shouldn't have a go at it!
I'm much less clear about how she can make any progress, faced with an educational system within which, introducing a 5 to 7 year old child to an arithmetic jotter, is regarded as an infringement of his/her civil liberties/human rights/'comfort zone'/personal space ....et al ..

I wish people would stop slagging off Carol. She is trying to do something to help children, so why can't we just support that instead of being negative once again. I don't understand how she was disloyal to countdown, they are the ones who got rid of her, and yes I know it was over her huge salary, but come on if any one of us was paid that sort of money would we really turn it down? I personally think she was worth every penny that C4 paid her and I wasn't even that bigger fan of countdown!

Ms Vorderman became too big for her boots ages ago. Taking her on board will alienate many traditional Tory voters.

I also predict that Gordon Brown will win in two years time.........the wooden spoon that is!

It's about time somebody did something about the state of education in this country - we have so many children who can't read or write properly as well as not being able to do maths. You need to have these skills to get through life and we should be educating children to be able to do these things.
I'm glad to hear Carol is putting something back after all that maths has given her. Good luck and I hope you make a difference.

Agree totally with the last comment. Her disloyalty to countdown and C4 which made her says it all. Scientists recently discredited the detox diet she writes books about. She has no talent and I believe this latest pitch is just another vain attempt at self-gratification.

Good on you Carol for doing something positive. Regardless of the Tories motives only good can come of this!
One more thing, you don't remain in the limelight for 25 years if your talentless...

What a crying shame that the Tories need a gimmick like the Carol tale to beef up what is a very limp opposition, clearly short on policies and long on spin. With a clueless leader like Cameron, I predict the Labour Party will win by default again in two years time

And she is qualified to do this job - Why?
Get a grip everyone. This woman could do a few sums. Hardly rocket science is it.
I would not feel that this overpaid and over rated woman was qualified enough to teach my dog how to beg.
