I'M PROUD OF THE JOB YOU ALL DO

Defence minister Hutton pays tribute

DEFENCE SECRETARY: John Hutton
DEFENCE SECRETARY: John Hutton

THIS has been another busy year for all of our Armed Forces. The challenges have been immense and often dangerous-but your ability to rise to them with bravery, professionalism and dedication has been an inspiration to me as a newcomer to this job.

I have seen at first-hand the vital work you do in some of the world's most inhospitable places. Whether regular or reservist, or as a civilian working in support of our Armed Forces, I am proud of the job you do.

And I think there is a growing awareness and respect among the public for the contribution you make.

This year thousands of people from all walks of life have lined the streets to welcome your colleagues home on their return from Iraq and Afghanistan. And at this time of year, my thoughts are with the families and friends of those who have lost loved ones.

I'd like to pay special tribute to families - and the sacrifices they make

The national security arguments that took us to Afghanistan are as strong today as they were in 2001.

Terrorism poses a direct threat to the security of the British people.

And the vital work you are doing in Helmand and across the south is preventing al-Qaeda turning the region back into a base for launching terrorist violence on our own streets, against our own people. And thanks to your efforts over the last five years we now see an Iraq well on its way to being an independent, stable and democratic state.

The job you do is demanding, and often dangerous. Many serving personnel have been injured over the past year. I wish each of you a speedy recovery.

I would like to pay a special tribute to your families and the sacrifices they make. They are the backbone of our defence effort.

Christmas is a time for families to be together, and I know that many of you will be separated from your loved ones. I wish you and your families a safe and happy Christmas and a peaceful New Year.

Like to see the Labour Government in Helmand.. then we see the grey men of No10, fully equipped in everything Kevlar- underpants included! Politicians need to keep their cnouts out and leave the fighting to the men at the front.

Quite right, LB - these platitudinous overpaid useless labourite ministers are happy to send our lads to die in ungrateful foreigners' wars and we all know that Loser is far more interested in helping out these ungrateful foreigners with vast sums of taxpayers' money than he is in looing after ex-great Britain

More meaningless platitudes from another Liebour
clown. I'd like to send the entire cabinet out
there with targets painted on their foreheads!
Or force them to walk in front of the troops vehicles!
