Anthea Turner: We may lose our mansion

Tearful star reveals secret hell.. But she got £1m as firm made loss

£100m CRASH: Grant and Anthea
Image Flag

FORMER TV golden girl Anthea Turner last night sobbed as she revealed she's lost an astonishing £100 MILLION in the credit crunch.

The Perfect Housewife presenter told how her husband Grant Bovey's buy-to-let empire had collapsed, and wept: "Our backs are against the wall-we may even lose our mansion."

But today we can also reveal how she POCKETED a staggering £1.2 MILLION from one of their firms as it went bust owing creditors £200,000.

Worry

In an exclusive interview with the News of the World Anthea-who owns a £5 million estate in Surrey and a £5 million chateau in France-said: "We are in it like lots of other people in this country who have been bitten by economic circumstances. I can't remember the last time I slept properly because of the worry."

And husband Grant, 47-whose three companies have gone bust-said: "Our net worth was over £100 million-now it's an awful lot less, just a small fraction of what it was."

But our investigations today show how Anthea, 48, took large amounts of money out of Imagine Furnishings, her part of Bovey's empire, as it lurched towards disaster.

In 2006, Anthea paid herself £900,000 from the firm that furnished Bovey's buy-to-let homes at £11,000 a time. In 2007, as the credit crunch loomed, she took £389,410 in 'consultancy services', £240,792 in advances and a £573,738 loan which was waived by the company.

So she was paid a total of £1,203,940 in the same year the firm posted a LOSS of £685,259. Grant has agreed in the past that Anthea's only involvement was "choosing the sofas."

Meanwhile Anthea told us of her fears for the future. "I'll be 50 in 18 months' time and now I don't even know whether we can keep our home," she said. "The property industry has been caught with its knickers around its ankles."

She and Grant revealed they are "very seriously considering downsizing" from their £5 million Surrey mansion in a 57-acre estate complete with £100,000 polo field, stables full of horses and a £500,000 tennis court with pavilion and floodlights.

"We have had to re-evaluate our lives. I don't think a £5 million mansion makes you happy," said Anthea.

The TV presenter-who now fronts BBC3's Perfect Housewife which showcases her as a domestic goddess-insisted she was more worried about the knock-on effects of the couple's empire crash on other people than on herself.

"Those people who moan about you driving around in your nice big car are forgetting the guy who washes the car now hasn't got a job or who did the maintenance on it," she said.

"There is no way Anthea Turner can complain about anything in her life."

The couple's lavish world lost its glitter this summer when property prices plummetted and banks cut loans. Yet rather than accept the crisis engulfing his businesses Bovey threatened to sue anyone who dared suggest he could be in trouble, insisting: "We have huge profits yet to materialise." They didn't.

"We are in the same boat as millions of other people," said Bovey last night. "Next year is going to be very tough."

Of Anthea's earnings, he confessed: "We can't deny she had all this money out. But Imagine Furnishings was making an awful lot of money at that time." The firm went into administration last Monday.

A source close to the couple said: "A lot of people are out of pocket and very unhappy. They'll look at the money Anthea took from Imagine Furnishings and wonder what the hell was going on."

And a source at one of the firms that supplied Anthea's furniture range and is now chasing her for cash added: "It's not her who'll be struggling to make ends meet."

Come and live in our council estate... Go on.... Be a single mum of 2 kids with a full time (12 hours a day, 6 days a week!) job and then when you're still struggling to pay your rent and bills and can't sleep at night, I'll sympathise...
Stupid woman

Well whether we believe all we see and hear in the press about the 'Bovey's' is irrelevant. It may be true; it may not. But one thing is true, when you are in the public eye, you maybe human, but you do have a certain level of responsibility and an example to set. If I was Anthea with my two 5million pound houses, I dont think I would be making comments about how: 'the credit crunch has hit us like everyone else'...that's a bit below the belt. The Bovey's live a multi million pound lifestyle that to the rest of us is just pure fantasy. Their being 'excellent employers' is irrelevant. There are lots of excellent employers around whose contribution to this country is exemplary who are being hit worse than the poor Bovey's, but arent whining about it, so give us all a break. Either put up or shut up.

I and my hubby had cancer this year and would gladly give everything to not have had it but you know regardless of whether you lose £100m or £1000 the emotional turmoil is the same for all of us.
life is too short to whinge.
If I won the lottery the bulk of it would go into buying as many local properties as possible and provide the good people who have lost everything with a roof over their heads at minimal rent. Rent received would buy more homes for the homeless.

Yes I am rich I am alive and have people who love me.

By christine.. Posted December 18 2008 at 12:26 PM.

Hope they read these comments and realise that nobody likes them the great British public (which is normally right) are sick of you two and have been for some time and to dare say that you can't sleep at night as you might have to downsize from you 5mil mansion in a time when people are losing everything just enforces the distaste that we the British public have of you.

I personally hope you two end up on the street !!!

By Thomas.. Posted December 18 2008 at 12:42 AM.

What exactly is downsizing from a 5 million pound estate? a 2 million townhouse, perhaps! Cry me a river!
The precious thing should try real poverty on for size.

By jez.. Posted December 17 2008 at 2:53 PM.

Look its not nice for anyone to go down. Grant, looks like you have learnt the hard way. You need to pick yourself up and move on. Next time spend a little more time on the business plan. I have nothing no house no car ... but I am working my butt off to buy a house. There are alot of people with sour grapes on here, dont listen to them. Life is about choices. I bet all these people on here would change their view if they suddenly won the lottery. I plan to have my business one day, it takes courage to start a business. Its a risk and worry to start a business and if it was not for people like you, these "sour grapes" people would not have a thing.

By Mike.. Posted December 16 2008 at 10:46 AM.

All I can say is....hooray! Writing off a £600k loan to the missus? Paid a consultancy fee for choosing a few matching cushions? I bet she didn't give much of that to her 'charities' (who have mainly dropped her anyway). What goes around...

By DJ.. Posted December 15 2008 at 10:18 PM.

What has everyone got against Anthea ? I think it is disgusting the way in which she is treated. So what if she went off with a married man - she's not the only one! She has always worked hard and supported numerous charities and worthwhile causes. I'm sure she will admit that although they are suffering financially during this time they will be ok; but nothing would be worse than her going through years of infertility treatment and being unable to have children of her own. This can cause mental fragility to even the strongest of personalities .....I hope she doesnt read these comments...- I can't believe people can be so cruel - they should think carefully of the possible consequences this "bullying" can do to someone.

By Dotty.. Posted December 15 2008 at 7:15 PM.

I work hard for my little company and it is getting harder by the day to scrape money in to pay my staff and pay bills, but I do it, I have cut my wages, if you can say that, as I only pay myself the minimum I need with no extra at all.

I wont see my staff without a job and for the bpast year I have done this, and I hope that it will all pay off in the future, and we will all be secure once again.

Their business was a sham, no respect for people. If my business were that big, and in trouble I would cut expences and economise as much as possible and try my best not to loose my employees. I have always said that the business would never take my home (a semi in hampshire) but if I had two 5 mil houses, they both would have gone and I would not bat an eyelid. I dont have the luxury of their choices... grow up Anthea, live with in your means and shut up, leave if you must and live in one of your flats in Dubi. Now thats a good idea.

By Joanne Gaston.. Posted December 15 2008 at 8:54 PM.

Perhaps Playboy will bail them out... maybe they'll pay big bucks for a full-frontal spread of the old woman?

By Roy.. Posted December 15 2008 at 8:50 PM.

I can understand that it must be a bit of a shock but they won't end up eating at a soup kitchen. Yes they may have to sell their big house but hardly the end of the world is it. Sell up, downsize and buy another big house but for less money.

There are families out there losing everything and being reduced to being homeless. These people have no savings, no support and will spend Christmas apart living with relatives or in emergency accommodation.

Its times like these when you realise how little support there is from the state. When working people who have paid into the system all their lives are reduced to begging for help from charities.

By Richard.. Posted December 15 2008 at 6:06 PM.

They deserve evrything that's coming to them. They looked down on other people and were only too happy to lord it and not give a toss for others. They were grossly overrated and overpaid in the extereme. Now maybe they might have to understand wgat the ordinary people have to put up with

Oh dear. At least this will put an end to ludicrous House Price Inflation, until the next time ofcourse!

By Jan Giergiel.. Posted December 15 2008 at 6:46 PM.

I feel sorry that MOST of the comments are based on ignorance and jealousy. I have met the Bovey's on a number of occasions, and I can only speak well of them. DON'T believe all you see in the press!! I have worked for them, and probably won't be able to any more. They were always 100% straight and paid me on time, and I felt that someone should offer a small slice of balance to the nasty comments...

By Dave H.. Posted December 15 2008 at 6:33 PM.

People with lots of money dont know what it like to find times hard. I have 3 kids had to go back into education as there is no work about. Sounds so simple but when you get no help of the goverment cause they seem to think a 6k sudent loan is more than enough money and my partner cant afford to go back to work as we get no help with child care and will get no help as im a student. Come january i may not have a house to live in. So i say this to all you rich folk complaining about loosing out in the credit crunch. Think of all the small people unable to pay there bills cause no-one in this world helps us out. Arrigance will get you nowhere. You can downsize what can i do? nothing as i dont own my house. When you have experienced true loss then comeback and make a statement, till then get on with your lives and stop complaining. i could probably live the rest of my life happy with £500k max and your complaining about all these millions you have lost when you probably earn more than £500k in six months. You could use your brain and survive on a lot less and get on with your lives instead of making all us small people feel even worse than we already do.

They were not entrepeneurs, just speculators that lost. I hope the creditors pursue them for all they are worth and the rental properties return to the market for "hardworking families" to buy at affardable prices.

By HPC VMR.. Posted December 15 2008 at 11:15 AM.

£100 Million fortune?. This guy has never really had money, it has always been potential money, which is why every business he has been involved with has gone bust. But I'm sure he will be back fronting up some other get rich scheme which gullible investors will fall for.

I feel for the poor people they will never pay - but to them it doesn't matter. She was always princes s tippytoes (Eamon Holmes) and he is an arrogant idiot out to rip people off. He may well loose his mansions but people with real families and real lives and real homes will loose their real dignity because of this idiot. And they may do so for a few thousand pounds that Bovey and Turner didn't pay.
They are disgusting people but just remember what goes around comes around.

By Jenny.. Posted December 14 2008 at 7:02 PM.

Funniest thing I've read all week. Bovey's gameplan was, in essence, to make money for nothing by snapping up properties and renting them to people whom he had helped price out of the market. Very pleased that this has backfired horribly. Buy to let is part of the "get rich while doing next to nothing" mentality that has permeated Britain for the last decade and has now brought it to its knees. (Forget Gordon Brown's self-serving garbage that this is all a nasty surprise that "started in America".)

By Alex F.. Posted December 14 2008 at 4:52 PM.

what a greedy, clueless and pathetic woman she is.
What happens if she is forced to carry out her version of 'downsizing'? How will she ever survive?

By cam.. Posted December 14 2008 at 5:11 PM.

> What on earth difference does it make to anyone''s life whether this couple are skint or not.

I'll tell you: it is a reassuring message that buy to let is failing as a business strategy. This is enormously encouraging, as it is a parasitic lifestyle, and weakens the country's economy, by allowing a small but significant percentage of the potential workforce to do nothing, putting their feet up while others work for them. Ever wonder why the UK is currently in such a parlous state? BTL has been a crucial part of the story of the last decade. Take the time to stop and think it through economically: imagine what our country would be like if EVERYONE tried to make their money as a buy to let landlord. BTL lending has been an absolute disaster for Britain.

This is not schedenfreude; this is relief that the "invisible hand" of the market is finally giving certain elements of the population a well-deserved smack.

By Barry.. Posted December 14 2008 at 3:44 PM.

As Anthea made a TV show about house cleaning the jobcentre will know what sort of job she will have to accept. CLEANER.

Buy 2 Let was a terrible business, which had the impact of 'muscling out' first time buyers so they could not afford starter homes and brought no real economic development to the country like manufacturing etc does.

Well it seems the law of Karma also applies to property. NOW get scrubbing Ms Turner, you've missed a bit!! ;0)

By Jon.. Posted December 14 2008 at 3:29 PM.

I bet that £100m was just debt - what a pair of muppets. Never mind, they can sell the mansions in France and here, but they'll have to comply with the demolition order on the pool house first! Maybe we'll see them on the next series of "The Planners Are Coming".

By MA.. Posted December 14 2008 at 3:05 PM.

Is it now safe to say that Grant Bovey`s company is in trouble ?

When he said that he would sue anyone who said Imagine Homes was in financial difficulty, that was a clue that things were going pear shaped.

The comment below about the British hating other Brits being successful is spot on. This country is full of people wo want to laugh at another's misfortune and why we don't have as much success internationally as some other countries.
I don't feel much sympathy for Anthea because she's had her good luck, and she might again in the future. But I certainly don't want to hammer the nails in the coffin like some very jealous people seem to.

Oh dear, my heart bleeds it really does.

This is before the UK loses even more service/property jobs - keep up the good work everyone and don't buy a house, they'll soon be cheap enough for your children to afford from their ASDA/TESCO/McJob wages.

By Andrew .. Posted December 14 2008 at 1:30 PM.

By bob.. Posted December 14 2008 at 12:46 PM.

Company directors who continue to trade whilst knowingly insolvent become personally liable for the company debts. It is also illegal for a director to become overdrawn on a loan account. A director of a furniture company I know was sent to prison for 4 years for fraudulent trading because he took money out of his company and left the creditors high and dry. I hope that the Official Receiver investigating the Bovey companies carries out a proper inquiry into the conduct of the directors to ensure that there has been no improper behaviour.

We are struggling to stay afloat here. Lucky if our giros will continue to support our family season ticket at Parkhead, our weekly ciggies and drink.

By e-boss.. Posted December 14 2008 at 11:44 AM.

The big buy to let companies were some of the big reasons our banks needed bailing out!

That is why they simply went bust leaving us to pick up the debts that supported theit lifestyles.

I like the way she says:
“Our backs are against the wall—we may even lose our mansion.”

Most of us will never have the pleasure of living in a mansion let alone owning one.

Hey, Anth, pull your head out of your behind and look at the people who may be struggling to pay off morgages on 2 or 3 bedroom houses and risk losing that, putting their families at steak.

Why is everyone still so hard on Anthea? The girl definitely needs some PR guy to give her lessons on what not to say, but reading all the comments on here, for goodness sake, she fell in love, she didnt kill anyone and a million and one other people do it on a daily basis.

The one decent thing Grant Bovey did was come clean, let go of a failing relationship and marry Anthea rather than having a bit on the side..... personally, Im not interested in how their finances are doing, Im too busy worrying about mine and I fail to see why this is even given space in the paper..... enough said.

By Lisa.. Posted December 14 2008 at 11:08 AM.

I've lived in one of imagine homes' buy-2-let flats and trust me, the furnishings were naff, so I can't understand the justification of her salary. They were lucky not skillful - they were riding the wave of increasing property prices. Obviously no-one told them that waves eventually break.

By James.. Posted December 14 2008 at 11:07 AM.

I cannot say I particularly like Mr Bovey, however, when I look at the *have your say* mail, it appalls me that in this time of financial meltdown people can be so pleased an another's downfall. What on earth difference does it make to anyone''s life whether this couple are skint or not. I for one look for better things to laugh at. I am ashamed of the alleged notion that the British hate the success of others...looks like the minority concerned are the ones writing about this couple. What a shame.

It shows Anthea still has friends in the TV world, because every now and again, up she pops on our screen. Someone somewhere is doing her a favour, because most of the public can't stand her. It makes me wonder how Grant Bovey manages to keep failing in his business ventures. Surely, he must have learnt something from his past mistakes. Poor, poor Anthea and Grant. It's not been a fruitful partnership, has it?

By Denise.. Posted December 14 2008 at 10:00 AM.

well boo bloody hoo Anthea, what makes you think you are any different to anyone else at this time of global financial meltdown, perhaps if you spent less on fancy cars, clothes, holidays, and homes we wouldn't have global financial problems, it's parasites like you draining what resourses this country has, maybe if you sold you fancy mansion and gave the money back to the country, we might have a chance of saving this country from financial ruin. Jealousy is a terrible emotion isn't it? Noone knows what goes on behind closed doors and noone really knows the truth about him leaving his wife her and all that malarky.

Anthea was a wonderful Blue Peter presenter too so whoever said she is talentless is talking out of their backside.

Why shouldn't they strive to make more money? Far too many people are so quick to bring others down whom they view as a success and therefore a threat. These are generally the same lazy gits who are too lazy to make anything of their lives!

I suggest they dig up the tennis courts and cement themselves in it

Are we bothered? I do not care what happens to this woman as long as she does not return to our television screens.

oh fantastic, i'd love to see this slimeeeee couple back in a semi-detached where they belong. Shes a pushy little creep. Money doesnt make you a lady baby you are a fake to the core!

By sarah jane mcentee.. Posted December 14 2008 at 6:41 AM.

Oh yawny yawn, whether you're rich or poor it's up to you to handle your finances properly. If you have 2 TWO £5 million homes then why bother with a buy to let business to try to become even richer, and anyway, who needs a £5 million home in France anyway, property outside of Paris is cheap, so they should perhaps settle for a £1 million chateau. But my god, stop moaning woman, it's not as though you're struggling to pay the basic essential bills, and struggling to eat!!! How can you expect the ordinary people to care about your sob story?! You should have invested wisely and not been so greedy.

No sympathy at all for any of them lot. Celebrates deserve all they get in life as most are overplayed and over privilege.

By PHILIP WILSON.. Posted December 14 2008 at 5:18 AM.

bet peter powell will have a smile on his face today...

By doug.. Posted December 14 2008 at 3:28 AM.

Karma...treat people as you'd want to be treated yourself...considering the way he dumped his wife and kids for her, and she dumped Peter Powell for him, what goes around comes around - these are a few lessons in Life, for Mr. and Mrs. Bovey.

Perfect Housewife was axed 18 months ago when BBC Three became a channel for the under 15s.

I never could stand this woman. Exactly what 'talent' did she ever have? I'll be happy if I didn't see her ugly mug on the box again and she vanishes into obscurity!

By LB.. Posted December 14 2008 at 3:44 AM.

If they were genuinely worth £100M (and weren't just sitting on a pile of loans) then to loose so much shows just how greedy and stupid they must have been! I'm sure they'll survive in a good deal of comfort - I wonder how many they've left really struggling. They don't deserve to sleep well!

By zz.. Posted December 14 2008 at 2:37 AM.

Still delusioned - you never actually HAD 100 million to lose - it was just your imagination......

By HP Cranky.. Posted December 14 2008 at 2:28 AM.

Our hearts bleed .... not! Welcome to the real world!

By Mairi.. Posted December 14 2008 at 1:59 AM.

I don't feel sorry Bovey and Turner, they are a greedy pair and I hope they lose everything because of their greed.

By MrCrip.. Posted December 14 2008 at 1:58 AM.

It's ok, she can just make more money, owing to her copious talents....

Oh dear! a big welcome to the real work, like the rest of us live in!

By betty.. Posted December 14 2008 at 1:33 AM.

Grant Bovey has has a history of failing with every business venture he ever got involved in, without exception. He is a quite simply loser who dramatically overrates his business acumen.
A few months before HBOS took IMAGINE off him, he was boasting that it "had HUGE profits that had not materialised yet" and threatened to sue anyone who said he had cashflow problems.
And now look at him - a "consultant" for HBOS, which has taken his business off him. How the self-perceived mighty have fallen.
"Huge profits that have not materialised." What a phrase ! That sums him up - fantasy profits. They NEVER DID "materialise". And other Buy-to-Let dream-promotion artists will end up in the same boat.
As for Anthea, well, she nicked someone else's husband and she made her bed .... so stop blubbering Anthea, and lie on it.

By Trevor.. Posted December 14 2008 at 1:17 AM.

Another great story from your wonderful newspaper
