At Chelmsford’s Hylands Park another pretender to the throne of the best British band came to the fore.
The Script are number one in the album charts, pretty much out of nowhere.
Their genius like catchy riffs and harmonies have caught the imagination of rock fans. What’s great about that is that varying radio stations, like Virgin and Radio 1 have given them airplay alongside stalwarts like Radio 2 and even Magic.
Their success has been driven by the Radio listening public.
After Saturday at the V Festival, they are going to explode in the next few weeks. Aside from their songs, it will also be through hard work as the Irish lads managed three shows on the day
The Dublin act packed out the JJB Arena on Saturday afternoon with a thirty minute. The radio success echoed their audience, 8-year-olds to at least three pensioners – and they seemed to be the ones dancing the most.
Interestingly they were moshing by the end of the set as well.
After that the men of the moment - vocalist Danny O’Donoghue, guitarist Mark Sheehan and drummer Glen Power - then scooted across the grounds to the main stage
Unbooked for a slot, but certainly not unloved they knocked out a mini 10 minute set much to the pleasure of the crowd.
It was another one of those weird moments at V, where you realise next time round this band won’t be talking to the stage unannounced. They will be up there with the big boys.
Now if that wasn’t enough for the boys, they then headed to the Virgin Radio VIP Tent for a tremendous 20 minute set to a privileged few. They ditched the amps, went acoustic and were mesmerising.
Leading man Danny and songwriting buddy Mark were note perfect, naturally oozing through their harmonies to their best hits We Cry and the Man Who Would Not Be Moved. That track for me seems to sum up the festival mood there this year - No-one wanted to move from their spots, as the bands had been so on the money.
As far The Script expect a lot from them. Their confidence is backed by immense talent. And yeah, and the lads also look like boy band material which keeps the ladies smiling.
I’m sure they won’t want to be reminded that Louis Walsh once had them under his wing as Westlife clones My Town – ladies and gentlemen they’ve moved in the right direction.
The boys’ talents were so infectious it even to stop brekkie DJ legend Christian O’Connell for gossiping - for a few minutes at least.
If you want to hear that majestic little nugget of rock pop excellence, Virgin Radio did the sensible thing by recording the set. It’s available on their website, along with V stints from The Hoosiers and The Pigeon Detectives.
