Root out BBC's fat controllers

IT'S been a bad week for the BBC.

Our revelation today that 50 executives earn a total of £14 million a year - and 25 of those rake in BASIC salaries of more than £250,000 - will only add to their woes. Good.

And their pay doesn't include huge pension funds like the £2.7million for Deputy Director General Mark Byford (salary £513,000).

This is the company that gets £3 BILLION from the taxpayer in licence fees. It's like winning the lottery every year - without buying a ticket.

The fallout of the Jonathan Ross and Russell Brand affair exposes so much that is wrong with this bloated, arrogant, dysfunctional corporation.

Their pathetic, inept handling of the Radio 2 scandal tells you why the BBC needs a root-and-branch review.

It is an organisation ruled by faceless bureaucrats who live in a different, glorified world from its customers.

Maybe because they pay Ross a ludicrous £6million a year - that's almost £16,500 a DAY - they think they can join the big-pay gravy train.

But why did we have to apply for a Freedom of Information request to get the bosses' salaries?

Our £139.50 licence fees are paying their wages!

Isn't it time the Government scrapped the licence fee and let the BBC stand on its own feet?

MPs must insist the executives in charge get their house in order.

Those that don't should be replaced with people who will.

And the first to go should be those overpaid controllers.

A time for change

ON Tuesday, 140 million Americans are expected to vote for a new President.

It promises to be the biggest election turnout since JFK became the 35th President in 1961.

And, if you believe the polls, the next occupant of the White House will be America's first black leader, Barack Obama.

It will be a remarkable victory.

The young, inexperienced Democratic Senator from Illinois will have overwhelmed his Republican rival and true American hero, John McCain, after an exhausting yet exhilarating campaign.

One is a symbol of the past and more of the same, the other a promise for change, vigour and energy.

The victor is entering the Oval Office in a world mired in financial crisis and international tensions.

Despite relative inexperience, Barack Obama has shown he has the charismatic qualities to be the next leader of the free world.

It's time for change.
