The SAS-trained officers will protect the soldier prince with the fearsome Heckler & Koch G36 pump-action assault rifles if he is sent to another war zone.
It is the clearest signal yet that Harry, who fought the Taliban in Afghanistan, may return to the frontline.
His bodyguards recently took the powerful rifles to Afghanistan on a secret fact-finding mission. They were taught how to "take out" suicide bombers and snipers at long range.
The team of crackshots, from Scotland Yard's S014 unit, usually carry Glock 17 pistols. Harry, 24, who last week was on a charity motorbike trek in Africa with his brother William, wants to take part in a second tour of duty.
A senior source told us: "Scotland Yard is taking no chances with Harry's security.
"If the Prince is posted back to the frontline his bodyguards will go with him and be prepared.
The £750 short-barrelled rifle fires up to 750 rounds per minute. The guards will not carry it in Britain.
Clarence House said Harry was "committed" to his career in the Army and ready to do what was required, adding: "We do not comment on his specific military commitments."

What does he gain by going? Doesn't he make the troops he is with more of a target. If he insists tell no one. I have always heard everyone is created equal-some just a little more equal.
If the weapon is so protective shame on you for not giving it to All your troops.

What a load of rubbish Harry is! why should he have bodygaurds? for Christ sake he is supposed to be a soldier...¨a fighting man¨. But then he comes from a whimp so is it any surprise? the quicker that lot is abolished the better it will be for Britain; I mean lets face it...the Greek have been living on the state for years now.

It says something of the British Army when you to have to babysit a prince in combat I'm sure most of the guys in his unit probally feel their at an extra risk when hs is around them, give me a break. Also if they have no faith in the SA80 why not arm all troops with the G36.

You Brits are just the biggist whimps. If he was a true soldier he wouldn't need a body guard. But what can you expect from a people who complain about being shot with a BB Gun. We should have let Hitler win in England.

WHAT A BLOODY SHAM..
Tom Cruise, Mission Impossible 3, SUPERGUN!?
Lemme tell you a few things about the G36..
1, It was not made famous at all by Tom Cruise. It was made famous in computer games such as Joint Operations, STALKER, Battlefield 2 and Call of Duty 4.
2, If your gonna put an article like this out, at least find designations. G36C for example is not 'pump action' no assault rifles are 'pump action' especially not the G36C, which now comes with a combat handle and can fire not 750 rounds per minute but 800 rounds per minute.
3, What on earth is he doing with bodyguards on the front line? Yet more British troops to be aimed at in combat? I tell you what, put them where they should be.

Sad to see your prince and other soldiers over in Afganistan while your government allows Sharia law courts to be set up in London. Pathetic.

If the royals want to act like normal people then why is there a monarchy? Dont they realise how much risk they are putting everyone under by joining the forces? Needing extra protection, is that available for every other soldier?

are these two really in the army, they play in the desert, spend lots of time at parties and night clubs, they just make mockery of being soldiers.they cost us a fortune with body guards etc.the two of them will be no better than the other clown andrew.

Dump the SA80 and give this weapon to all British troops.
The G36 is used by the German & Spanish forces among many other tier 1 forces... its superior to the problematic SA80/L85A2, which only used by the UK.

I admire prince Harry's courage, and also understand that he has to be protected as the 3rd in line to the throne. But that is not to say that is a complete waiste of money.

This dumbarse, like his even more useless dolt of a brother, left to his own devices would spend ALL his time nightclubbing, womanising and getting drunk.
No matter how many bodyguards, they never be enough to keep him from his chav-like behaviour.
God knows what his wonderful granny makes of her useless idiotic grandsons..

To the Mother of a real Soldier, my heart go's out to you and prayers go out to your son and all the other Soldiers for there safe return, but why all the animosity pointed at the Prince? this is a member of the Royal Family that wants to stand along side the Troops that serve our nation, its not his fault that the Home Office demand his protection, remember he wanted to serve without people knowing but the press told the world. The Government NEEDS to PROTECT all our armed Forces and give them the tools they need to Fight. Dierect you anger at the Government not at the Prince.
He wants to be Proud to say the Man and Women he commands he also Fought With. God Bless the Prince and The Men and Women of all the Forces

fair play to harry, wanting to go back on Operation's with his Regt, but why does he need the extra protection? either they are saying his Regiment is not efficient and can not protect its own soldiers or he is so much more important than our sons and daughters, brothers and sisters and fathers and husbands. surly all soldiers should be the same we all take the queens shilling and know the risks

As a mother of a real soldier, I'm incensed to think of the resources wasted on this kid playing soldiers when our boys out there haven't even got all the safety equipment they need. This part time play boy has bloody bodyguards. Have they thought of the danger to his entourage as he will be a marked target? Just becaused he stamps his feet to go out there does he actually realise the true cost of him being action man?

If he was a real soldier with a real Platoon why would he need body guards...and this wpn is naff all compared to their fire power...
