Freecycle
There are nearly two million Freecyclers in the UK,
all donating their unwanted belongings for free in their area, in return for
others' unwanted items. Whether you've got some baby clothes you don't need,
or you're searching for a sofabed, just email your local Freecycle group,
describe what you're giving away or need and wait for offers to come
flooding in. The aim is to stop perfectly good items ending up in landfill
sites, plus it's a great way to meet your neighbours! uk.freecycle.org.
Lightbulbs
It might not be the most glamorous item in your
home, but the humble lightbulb can save the world! Well, kind of. Swap all
your regular bulbs for energy saving ones as they use up to 80 percent less
electricity. Not only will doing so reduce your carbon footprint, you'll
save a packet too - around £590 over the bulbs' lifetime.* energysavingtrust.org.uk
Dig In
Growing your own is a great way to green up your life
and save some pennies. The BBC's Dig In bus is touring the country this
summer giving advice and free seeds to grow tomatoes, lettuce and other veg,
plus Radio 1 DJ Sara Cox is blogging about her experiences as a first time
veggie grower on bbc.co.uk/digin.
Get On Your Bike!
It's healthy, it's free and it's great for
the environment - what's not to love about cycling? If it's been a while
since you got on your bike, don't worry, the government is running a scheme
to help people build up their confidence on the roads, with one-to-one
training and more cycle routes planned. Log onto tfl.gov.uk/roadusers

Swishing
Savvy fashionistas are doing their bit for the
environment by throwing swishing parties - no they're not as dodgy as they
sound - swishing is where everyone brings along clothes they've fallen out
of love with and swaps them for someone else's! And as the parties often
involve cupcakes and cocktails, being eco has never been so much fun...
