And now for the science bit...

Tempted by the promise of fewer wrinkles or cellulite-free thighs? Pick a product that can PROVE it works!

THE DANDRUFF DEMOLISHER

Phyto Phythéol Force 1, £11.50, claims to eliminate dandruff with its purifying and exfoliating agents - including willow and pepper extracts.

HOW WAS IT TESTED? Two groups of 20 volunteers with severe dandruff were tested. One group used Phythéol, the other used another leading dandruff shampoo twice a week for four weeks.

THE RESULTS? A whopping 95 per cent of Phythéol users found an improvement in the level of dandruff they were experiencing, compared to 84 per cent of those using the other leading brand. A definite winner in the fight against flakes!

THE BODY SUPER-SLIMMER

Nude Smoothing Body Refiner, £37.19, promises to dramatically smooth and firm your skin and take inches off your waist, hips and thighs. Mountain ash, ginger and ginkgo boost circulation and detoxify - which in turn helps weight loss - while green coffee and fig extracts firm the skin.

HOW WAS IT TESTED? Two groups of 40 women were trialled. One group used the product twice a day for three months, while the other group did nothing. Both groups were weighed and measured 12 weeks later.

THE RESULTS? One hundred per cent of the testers that sampled the Body Refiner lost weight, dropping an average of just over 6lb. They also lost an average of 2.52cm from their waist, 2.39cm from their hips and 2cm from their thighs. Result!

THE NIGHT NOURISHER

Sainsbury's Skin Therapy Radiance Boost Firming Night Cream, £6.84, is rich in pro-retinol and ceramides and claims to help reduce the appearance of fine lines, while maintaining skin's moisture levels.

HOW WAS IT TESTED? Fifty-six women applied the cream every night - after cleansing - for four weeks, and were then questioned about how their skin felt.

AND THE RESULTS? Seventy-five per cent claimed their skin felt firmer and more radiant - and said they'd definitely buy it again.

THE ANTI-AGEING WONDER CREAM

L'Occitane Immortelle Divine Cream, £62, launches this week and is billed as its best anti-ageing cream yet. Although pricey, it claims to redefine facial contours and restore radiance due to its combination of immortelle flower and myrtle oil, with skin-reviving qualities.

HOW WAS IT TESTED? Fifty-three women applied it morning and evening, for four weeks.

THE RESULTS? Ninety-four per cent said their skin felt smoother, 71 per cent said their wrinkles were less pronounced and 84 per cent said their skin felt firmer.

THE CELLULITE BUSTER

When it launched in April, Clarins High Definition Body Lift, £32, claimed to be one of the most effective cellulite treatments around. Scientists say that by combining sunflower, horse-chestnut and scabious flower extracts with caffeine (which is reported to break down fat), the caffeine's absorption is improved by 61 per cent, meaning that Body Lift works even faster and more efficiently than many of its cellulite-beating competitors.

HOW WAS IT TESTED? Clarins carried out tests on 3,515 women to prove that their product did what it said on the bottle.

THE RESULTS? Eighty-nine per cent of the women tested said they had firmer skin after three weeks of daily use and 78.9 per cent reported less visible cellulite and fatty deposits.

THE EYELASH STRENGTHENER

Lancôme Ôscillation Powerbooster, £24.50, is a vibrating, white-coloured primer that you apply under your normal mascara. It promises to make lashes look longer, thicker and stop you losing your natural ones.

HOW WAS IT TESTED? Sixty-eight women were given one of the magic wands to use for four weeks.

THE RESULTS? Eighty-one per cent said their lashes were in better condition, 73 per cent said they had denser and visibly longer lashes, and 85 per cent said they lost fewer lashes when removing their make-up. An extra step in your routine maybe, but worth a flutter!
