MATTE ATTACK!
Step away from the shimmer, ladies. This is the season NOT to shine...
PREP SCHOOL
Step 1: When it comes to matte
perfection, first start by layering several products to make skin shine-free
before you apply make-up. Try Elemis Balancing Lime Blossom Cleanser, £17.
The lime blossom controls oil production, so will keep your complexion
smooth. Apply to damp skin, massage and then rinse off.
Step 2: Layering products can dry
your skin out, so a good moisturiser is essential. Dermalogica's Welcome
Matte SPF15 Moisturiser, £24, from the new Clean Start range, is brilliant
at banishing shine on skin of any age. It's lightweight and contains
salicylic acid - the spot-zapping ingredient.
Step
3: Sweep Clinique Pore Minimizer Instant Perfector, £12.50,
across your forehead, down the front and sides of your nose, and on your
chin and cheeks. It acts like Polyfilla on open pores and creates a
super-matte look. Perfect!
ACE YOUR BASE
Step 1: Pre-foundation, use a
primer to provide a flawless surface, so the rest of your make-up sits flat
without looking dewy. Nothing beats Gosh Velvet Touch Foundation Primer,
£12.72, which makes your skin baby-bottom smooth and stays put for hours.
Step 2: Apply the UK's
best-selling foundation, Maybelline Dream Matte Mousse Foundation, £6.84. It
comes in 15 shades, so there's bound to be one to suit you! Each one has the
texture of a mousse, but when it touches the skin it leaves a matte-powder
finish. Another of our firm foundation faves is Barbara Daly Oil-Free
Foundation, £6.69, which is perfect for both oily and combination skin.
Step 3: To seal your foundation,
sweep on a mineral-based loose powder - it will give more coverage than a
non-mineral product and is less dehydrating. Estée Lauder Nutritious
Vita-Mineral Loose Powder Foundation SPF15, £24, not only gives an
airbrushed effect, but contains pomegranate extract, which provides a
natural anti-ageing punch.
DE-GLOSS YOUR LOCKS
Step 1: Wash your hair with an
oil-control shampoo like Revlon Professional Interactives Sebum Balance
Shampoo, £8.99. It's packed with sci-fi-sounding neuropeptide ingredients,
which stop your scalp getting oily while delivering moisture to your tresses
at the same time.
Step 2:
"Matte hair has become a strong trend because of celebrities like Peaches
Geldof and Amy Winehouse," says Jo Hansford, hairdresser to Yasmin Le Bon
and Elizabeth Hurley. "It's best worn in a messy up 'do." So just apply lots
of mousse before drying - we love the new Matrix Design Pulse Go Big Extra
Strong Hold Mousse, £9.95. Dry your hair upside down, adding Silvikrin
Hydrostyle Extra Strong Hold Hairspray, £2.76, at the same time, then
separate the hair with your fingers and pin up in a loose, messy bun.
Step 3: Sprinkle Lee Stafford Matt
Fat Powder, £8.50, on your roots. This will soak up any excess oil and
instantly lift your hair for a look Cheryl Cole would be proud of.
MATTIFY YOUR MANICURE
Step 1: When it comes to nails,
forget a base coat as it will reduce the vibrancy of your colour. Just
ensure your nails are clean and dry and gently buff them smooth. The
Leighton Denny Quatro File & Buffer, £5, has four clearly marked sides,
for filing, buffing, smoothing and shining.
Step
2: The darker the colour, the better when it comes to the matte
look. We're loving Zoya's new range of matte nail lacquers including the
gunmetal grey shade, Loredana, and the ruby red Posh, £9.25 each. For a
brighter colour, go for Bariella's nail polishes in Lemondrops, a bright
matte yellow, and Grape Escape (right), a violet purple, £8 each.
ADD A HINT OF COLOUR
Step 1: The matte trend needs
colour to stop it looking too flat - strong red lips are a sure-fire way of
adding oomph. Lancôme has never produced a matte lipstick until this week!
The new Color Fever Matte collection comes in three shades: Red Avant-Garde,
Red Paris Paris and Red Libertine (left), £17.50 each, and they each deliver
a matte finish with all the moisture and velvety feel of a regular lippy.
Step 2: Prime your eyes before
applying eyeshadow to stop the colour bleeding into your eye socket. E.L.F
Eye Primer & Liner Sealer, £3.50, is perfect - and a bargain, too. For
understated eyes to balance out strong lips, add a slick of Mac eyeshadow in
Shroom, £11. It has a matte texture with just a touch of sheen.
Step 3: Put colour in your cheeks
with L'Oréal True Match Blush in Rosewood (far left), £7.33. In stores this
week, you can use it to create a gorgeous matte glow. Also try No7 Natural
Blush Cheek Colour in Soft Damson, £8.60.
