Live: Robbie Williams

Verdict: ****

THE pop vultures have been circling around Robbie Williams lately.

But after a disastrous X Factor appearance and releasing his comeback single in the same week as Alex Burke, it's hardly a surprise.

For a singer used to selling out stadiums, choosing to return to just 3,000 fans is the equivalent of Chelsea playing a pre-season friendly at Grimsby Town. Filling the stage with 38 backing musicians doesn't exactly reek of confidence either.

The signs were even worse with Robbie's naff stage outfit of grey shirt and brown brogues.

Solo

But the following 90 minutes were a reminder of why Robbie became so big in the first place, the only long-lasting solo pop star Britain has produced in the past 20 years.

With George Michael in retirement and Sir Elton John living off old hits, we need singers with Robbie's charisma to be on form.

Seven songs from new album Reality Killed The Video Star is two too many - but Robbie's back to what he's best at: Showstopping ballads and pop Radio songs to be played for decades.

Plus, how many of us can really dance with such casual Jacko-like grace, or write songs as classy as Feel, Millennium or the other half-dozen hits he dusts off?

The X Factor could have killed off Robbie, but Simon Cowell has given us Leon Jackson and Steve Brookstein. Robbie gave us Angels. So who's really the one with the X Factor?
