Review: Call Of Duty - Modern Warfare 2

LIKE a David Haye right hook, this one was always gonna be a big hit.

With more than 750,000 pre-orders, THREE MILLION copies shifted this week (that's a Call £160MILLION) and its own Leicester Square premiere, Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has already proved it's a winner.

For two years, MW2 has triggered huge anticipation from hardcore gamers worldwide. And it's not surprising - MW2's predecessor shifted 13 million units and tempted 14 million unique users online.

And like the Kaiser Chiefs, you'd be wise to predict a riot - because ActiVision and Infinity Ward have stepped up once again (cue squeals of delight from geeks in their basements everywhere).

Firstly, the campaign mode is mind-blowing. With a more intense AI and wonderful storyline, gamers can enjoy a more detailed war game this time. Set five years after its predecessor, you are thrown into a world in chaos.

Missions take place across the globe and vary from stealthy take-downs to all-out carnage - the level in the favelas of Rio is quite astonishing, as is the fighting in America's suburbia. Overall though, Campaign Mode is a little short (six to seven hours gameplay) and could be longer.

But, as always with Call Of Duty, it's multiplayer that scores best. The new Spec Ops mode is great if you just want to take down the bad guys with a mate - the timed missions add a new dimension to the franchise.

However, it's the kill streaks, buzzkills and perks you receive during mass online battles that really make MW2 game of the year - and possibly the decade.

Stunning visuals, a variety of maps (with new downloadable to come, no doubt) and improved weapon options result in an enthralling experience.

So the wait is finally over - MW2 is here and it's gunner be a while before you play anything as good.
