It’s reasonably safe to say that Space Chimps is not one of those.
Because here are two conclusions you can, correctly, draw from the title: 1. The film is about chimps in space; 2. And will be absolute bobbins.
This CGI cartoon produced by Men in Black director Barry Sonnenfeld doesn’t just star gormless primates but was made by them as well.
With the only real question for a reviewer being, what to loathe the most. There’s the animation, which just about hits the standards of the Toilet Duck ad. There’s the hideously designed characters, including an alien sidekick that looks like a walking breast.
Then there’s the fact the writers were actually lazy enough to name the evil alien emperor Zartog. Voice talent includes US comedienne Cheryl Hines, who won’t just Curb Your Enthusiasm, like the title of her TV show, but flush it halfway to Antarctica.
If your kids’ appetite for space-related animation has been whetted by WALL-E . . . then take ’em to see WALL-E again.
