A spokesman for the RSPCA said: "The most important tip for pet owners is have insurance-vet bills can very quickly snowball if your pet gets ill, and you can soon regret not paying the relatively small fee for insurance."

Whoever you choose, the RSPCA recommends you arrange for at least £2,000-worth of cover.

A spokesman said: "If your pet develops a new medical condition, treatment can easily cost upwards of £2,000."

They also suggest you factor in cover for your animal if YOU fall ill so you can pay for emergency cattery or kennel fees. And make sure you're also covered if your pet is lost or stolen.

With an RSPCA cover plan owners can claim up to £6,500 for vet bills per condition, £750 to help recover a lost or stolen pet, and up to £100 a week for kennel or cattery fees.
