Dead Brit student 'fought off group sex attack'

PRETTY Meredith Kercher was killed as she fought off pals who tried to force her into group sex, say cops.

British student Meredith was found dead with her throat slit following a Halloween party in Perugia, Italy.

Cops say Meredith was killed by three lust-crazed friends who were trying to force her into an orgy.

Meredith's HOUSEMATE Amanda Knox, 21, has sensationally broken down and confessed to involvement in the killing, say officers.

Knox , her Italian boyfriend Rafaelle Sollecito, 24 and bar owner Lumumba Diya, 37, known as Patrick, have all been arrested.

They are being held on suspicion of conspiracy to commit manslaughter and conspiracy to commit sexual violence.

As news of the developments broke, shocking images of Knox and Sollecito surfaced on the internet.

In one, Knox is seen cackling manically as she poses with a machine gun while in another Sollecito poses as a mad doctor wielding a cleaver.

Police sources say their three suspects were detained after Knox broke down and confessed.

In her alleged confession, published in the Corriere Della Sera newspaper, she claimed her flatmate began screaming when she was in her room with Diya.

She said: “Patrick and Meredith were in Meredith’s room, while I had stayed in the kitchen.

“I can’t remember how long they were together in the room but I can only say that at a certain point I had heard Meredith screaming, and I was scared so I covered my ears.

“After that I don’t remember anything, my head is very confused.

“I don’t remember if Meredith called out or if I heard thuds because I was upset, but I can imagine what was happening.”

Police chief Arturo de Felice said: "All three participated in this crime. The motive was sexual and the victim rebelled."

He described 21-year-old Meredith as "morally innocent," saying "She was a victim, nothing more."

Mr Felice also said that no traces of drugs or alcohol had been found in Meredith's blood.

Italy's Interior Minister Giuliano Amato added weight to the forced group sex theory, saying: "It's an ugly story in which people - friends in her home - tried to force her into relations she didn't want."

Meredith, a student at Leeds University from Coulsdon, Surrey, shared a house with Knox, an exchange student studying at the University of Washington.

Knox also worked at a bar in Perugia called Le Chic, owner by third suspect Lumumba Diya..

Diya , a Congolese immigrant, is a married father.

Knox's boyfriend Sollecito, a computer-science student, told at the weekend how he and Knox had been horrifed to see Meredith's body in her bedroom.

His father said he could not believe his son was in any way involved in her killing.

Knox's parents also spoke of their horror at their daughter's arrest.

Stepmother Cassandra Knox, of Seattle, US, said: "I don't believe a word of it. I can't believe there is any truth in it at all."

She added Knox's father William was "in a state of utter shock and disbelief. There's no way she could have done it, it's all a horrible mistake."

Meredith's family were anxiously waiting in Italy for the go-ahead to return her body to the UK.

Parents Arline and John and sister Stephanie arrived in Perugia on Tuesday night, where they visited the morgue to see her body.

Stephanie, 24, read out a statement saying: “Words cannot even begin to describe how we feel right now, other than utterly devastated.

“Nothing can prepare you for the news we received on Friday evening and it has taken this long for us to feel able to express our thoughts.

“As anyone who had been lucky enough to have known her would testify, she was one of the most beautiful, intelligent, witty and caring people you could wish to meet.

“Nothing was ever too much effort for her - a loving daughter and sister and a loyal friend.”
